Kyrkbacken
Accommodation in Kyrkbacken
In Kyrkbacken, the harbour, church history and protected landscape appeal to different travel interests. There is a sandy beach and piers available year-round at the harbour; S:t Ibbs Church stands at the top of Kyrkbacken. With its protected slopes, Backafallen is another key feature.
Harbour, beach and museum
Kyrkbacken harbour has a sandy beach for swimming, and the piers are available year-round. The beach is a specific attraction for swimming, while the piers, as a year-round feature of the harbour, offer something different. This means you can consider the harbour for your trip both in terms of swimming and its piers, which are there throughout the year.
The Hamn Museum is part of the harbour. Housed in a neighbouring hodda, it displays the photo exhibition “Fishing and people in Kyrkbacken”. There are also 13 films about the history of the harbour associated with the museum. The exhibition’s title focuses on fishing and people in Kyrkbacken; the films turn their attention to the history of the harbour. These two perspectives help ensure that the harbour’s culture is not reduced to a single theme. Information about the exhibition may change; check before your visit to see whether the photo exhibition will be open then.
S:t Ibbs Church and its history
S:t Ibbs Church dates from the 13th century and stands at the top of Kyrkbacken. On Ven, it is the only one of the island’s two churches still in use. This distinguishes its current role from that of the island’s other church. The oldest part was built during the medieval herring fishing and trade in the Öresund by merchants, fishers and farmers. The church’s date and the building history of its oldest part complement one another: one places the building in time, while the other connects its origins with fishing and trade at the time. The Hamn Museum and the church both point to Kyrkbacken’s fishing history.
Backafallen and getting there
The steep slopes of Backafallen lie between Kyrkbacken and Bäckviken. They are designated as a nature reserve to protect the diversity of plant and animal species. Backafallen thus adds a connection with nature and landscape to the choice of destination, distinct from the harbour and church history. If you would like to visit this area, check the local access rules beforehand.
Some boats can call at Kyrkbacken on the other side of the island of Ven. If a call there is important to your travel plans, check the current schedules of the relevant boats in advance. This will help you include this travel option in your plans for your stay in good time.
