Kristianstad: Nature, Culture and Hotels
Accommodation in Kristianstad
Kristianstad combines nature experiences in Vattenriket and Ă…rummet with parkland, museums and traces of its past as a fortified city. This offers a range of options for planning your trip, including wildlife watching, cycling, architecture and art.
Experience nature and choose your routes
Naturum Vattenriket is the gateway to the Kristianstads Vattenrike Biosphere Reserve. At Naturum, you can explore an exhibition and ride the Opteryx. Ă…rummet Nature Reserve is close to the center of Kristianstad, and Naturum is located within the reserve. At the Utemuseum Ă…rummet, there is an observation hide with views of the wetlands and the city. The exhibition, ride and viewpoint offer different perspectives on nature and the city.
There are two routes to distinguish when planning your trip: Linnérundan runs along Årummet. Kristianstadsturen is a nature-focused cycling route that starts in the center of Kristianstad and follows quiet roads through the Skåne countryside. From Kristianstadsturen, you can take a detour across the bridge over the Helge å to Naturum Vattenriket.
Tivoliparken: park history and green space
Tivoliparken was created in the first half of the 19th century. The area between the western side of the fortified city and the Helge å, which had previously been subject to periodic flooding, was gradually planted with trees and developed as a promenade for residents. Today, the park has many unusual tree species, as well as several old and large trees. The park contains several path systems. Väsenlekplatsen, the large themed playground, is in the northeastern part. This park brings its historic layout, trees, paths and playground together in one place.
Buildings and traces of the fortified city
Heliga Trefaldighets kyrka was built from 1618 to 1628 and inaugurated on June 8, 1628. It is an example of Christian IV’s architectural style and has largely retained the interior and exterior appearance it had at its inauguration in 1628. Norra kasern was built between 1754 and 1768 and is well preserved both inside and out. It has Sweden’s only fully preserved floor plan based on the so-called block system.
Smaller buildings also point to the city’s fortifications: Fyrkappan was built in 1801 and originally served as a guardhouse at the northern city gate, Norreport. Norreport was part of the city fortifications and marked the northern boundary of the city. Kristianstad’s fortification plan covered the entire central city. It can still be traced in the city’s layout and is itself a historic monument. The buildings by the city gate and the larger historic layout offer different ways to explore the city’s history.
Museums, film and art
At Regionmuseet Kristianstad, you can visit permanent exhibitions on the history of Kristianstad and the changing landscapes of Skåne. The museum also presents several temporary exhibitions throughout the year. Kristianstads konsthall is in the same building as Regionmuseet and presents several exhibitions each year featuring contemporary Swedish and international art. The city’s history, landscapes and contemporary art offer different cultural experiences.
Filmmuseet presents an exhibition about events and people in Kristianstad that shaped the early development of feature films. At Järnvägsmuseet, you can explore railway history, earlier eras of train travel and historic railway settings. The museum’s history also includes its original opening location: it opened at the former Kristianstad Södra railway station.
