Arlöv – Industrial History, Culture and Nature
Accommodation in Arlöv
When looking for a hotel in Arlöv, your travel interests can help determine your choice of destination. Arlöv combines a local history shaped by industry with architectural heritage, theatre and natural destinations to the west of the town. Arlövs kyrka and Arlövs teater represent different chapters in the town’s history; Spillepeng offers opportunities for birdwatching and fitness trails. This gives you the chance to decide whether you are more interested in historic buildings, cultural events, or landscapes and leisure activities.
Nature, Trails and Coastal Meadows
From Arlöv, you can reach the four-kilometre-long Natur- och kulturstråket via Kronetorps Mölla or Arlövsgården. Spillepeng, a recreational area with fitness trails and opportunities for birdwatching, lies west of Arlöv. From a lookout point there, you can see across Lommabukten. The coastal meadows of Tågarps hed near Spillepeng have been grazed since the Bronze Age.
Spillepeng is part of Skåneleden SL5: the area is included in both Stage 13 Lomma–Spillepengen and Stage 14 Spillepengen–Bulltofta. The stage names identify Spillepengen as the endpoint of the stage from Lomma and the starting point of the section to Bulltofta. This means you can consider the recreational area not only for its activities, but also for its role in two named stages.
Church and Industrial History
Arlövs kyrka was inaugurated in 1900 and built in the Neo-Gothic style using yellow, machine-made brick. It was built as a new church for the parish of Burlöv in the area where a large part of the growing population lived. In 2000, the church was reinaugurated after an extensive interior renovation, which included restoring its original colour scheme.
Arlöv’s growth is closely connected to the construction of the sugar factory in 1869 and the railway station in 1871. Its industrial character is also part of the town’s history: Arlöv is a striking example of the influence of Svenska Sockerfabriks AB on a community. Medborgarhuset, Sockerbrukets hörsal and Kalinan are buildings of significant value.
Theatre and Mill Culture
Arlövs teater serves as a meeting place, theatre and club venue, and is the performance venue for Arlövsrevyn. The building was constructed in 1892 by Arlöv’s first health insurance fund, “Arlöfs Sjuk- och Begrafningskassa”. Arlövsrevyn’s New Year’s revues at Arlövs teater have been a tradition since 1995.
The 27-metre-high, wind-powered Kronetorps Mölla was built in 1841. Mölledagen is traditionally held in Burlöv on the first Sunday in July, when Burlövs Mölleförening gives guided tours of the mill. Guided tours by Burlövs Mölleförening are planned for summer Sundays. The mill’s operation depends on wind conditions. Before visiting, check whether the seasonal guided tour is taking place on your preferred date.
Swimming and Exercise
Burlövsbadet in Arlöv has four swimming pools, fitness facilities and interactive group training. You can get there by train to Burlöv station or by bus to the Burlöv Kronetorp stop; it is also close to a cycle path. As opening and class times may change, check the latest information before your visit.
