Vimmerby can be explored through a range of themes: local history, the Kulturslingan trail, connections to Astrid Lindgren, and outdoor activities. When planning your stay, these highlights can help you decide which aspects of the town interest you. Some stops tell stories of the past; others focus on literature, the landscape, or a walk.

Local history at the museum and in the park

Stadsmuseet Näktergalen is a cultural history museum in Vimmerby that presents the town’s local history. It is housed in a timber-framed building with wooden cladding, dating from the 18th century. Typical Baroque paintings from the town have been preserved on the ceilings and walls. This brings together two specific aspects in the museum: historic construction and interior design.

Källängsparken is a unique park dating from the 1950s. It was declared a listed building in summer 2010. Alongside the historic houses and museum rooms, there is also a park with its own cultural heritage.

Church and older traces

The current floor plan of Vimmerby kyrka dates back to a new building constructed between 1854 and 1857. During construction, the walls of the earlier building were reused in the east. The furnishings also point to an earlier church: Vimmerby kyrka has its pulpit, made by Olof Wiström and Anders Cornelius in 1713 and retained during the 1899 restoration.

An older layer of history is represented by the well-preserved stone cist in Gästgivarehagen. It shows that the area was already used as a burial site in the Neolithic period.

The Kulturslingan as a walking route

The Kulturslingan is a five-kilometre walking route through historically significant terrain of great cultural value. In central Vimmerby, it passes Warmbadhuset, Astrid Lindgrens Näs, and Stadsmuseet Näktergalen. The route also leads to the well-preserved buildings on Storgatan. It gives an interest in local history a tangible framework, bringing several of these points of interest together along one route.

Astrid Lindgren’s stories and garden park

At Astrid Lindgrens Värld, visitors can step into settings from her stories. Imaginatively designed play areas and settings from the tales invite visitors to play. Astrid Lindgrens Näs includes a garden park inspired by her life and literary work. These attractions have different focuses: Astrid Lindgrens Värld centres on settings and play areas, while the garden park takes her life and work as its starting point.

Astrid Lindgren was born at the Näs farm on 14 November 1907 and grew up there with three siblings and the other children.

More outdoor activities

At Lake Nossen, within the town of Vimmerby, there are large lawns and a sandy beach. This offers a stay by the water as a different focus alongside the historical and literary themes. Wimer Bike Park is directly connected to the northern part of Vimmerby.

Vimmerby’s tourist office is now located on the ground floor of the town hall. If you would like to visit the office in person, check its location beforehand.
