Timmernabben: Bathing, Seafaring and Ceramics
Accommodation in Timmernabben
Timmernabben combines a bathing area by the water with local maritime history and a long tradition of ceramics. When planning a stay, you can choose from a range of themes: time by the water, the lives of sailors and their families around the turn of the 20th century, and handicraft production. Smoking fish is also part of the town’s history.
Time by the water
The municipal bathing area in Gamla stugbyn offers access to the water via a bathing jetty and a small sandy beach. At Danska Varvet beach, Strandfiket serves homemade pastries in summer; the café is open seasonally. For your planning, the two places offer different things: Gamla stugbyn provides access to the water via a jetty and beach, while Danska Varvet has a summer café.
Harbour, seafaring and handicrafts
The Timmernabben båtsällskap boat harbour is next to the old ferry landing. The Sjöhistoriska rummet in Korsvirkeshuset shows how sailors and their families lived around the turn of the 20th century. Including the families broadens the maritime theme beyond seafaring: the focus is not only on sailors, but also on their relatives.
At Nabbens Rökeri & Fisk, fish has been smoked at the same location since the early 1950s, using the same traditional techniques and artisanal methods. This continuity applies both to the location and the way the fish is made, giving the craft a concrete local connection. Strandfiket is a seasonal summer offering; Nabbens Rökeri & Fisk, by contrast, represents a fish-smoking tradition that has continued at the same location using the same techniques since the early 1950s.
A description from November 2020 reports that work had begun on installing historical signs at important places in Timmernabben. They were intended to recall local history that was at risk of being forgotten. The themes also differ in period: the Sjöhistoriska rummet looks at the time around the turn of the 20th century, while the fish-smoking tradition dates back to the early 1950s.
Ceramic history in the local landscape
Ceramics offer another way to explore local history. Tillinge Fayence & Terracotta Fabrique began producing earthenware in Timmernabben in 1859. A ceramic tradition has continued uninterrupted on the grounds of Gabriel Keramik since the 1850s. The grounds are considered a culturally and historically valuable environment and one of the most interesting industrial heritage sites in Mönsterås Municipality.
The two dates point to different ceramic histories: Tillinge began producing earthenware in 1859; since 2021, Gabriel Keramik has produced only tiled stoves. The windmill on the grounds of Gabriel Keramik is also considered a significant building in the local landscape. It adds an architectural dimension to the production history.
Choose Timmernabben as your destination
If you’re looking for a hotel for a stay in Timmernabben, you can start by choosing what you’d like to focus on: bathing by the water or local history. The latter spans everything from the lives of sailors and their families to ceramic production and fish smoking. This lets you shape your stay around your own interests rather than giving equal weight to every aspect of the town.
