Eriksmåla combines a long market tradition with historic roads, preserved architecture and glass art. There is also a lit exercise trail. During your stay, you can focus on different themes: market history, building culture, glass or exercise.

Market Tradition and Historic Roads

The Eriksmåla market has been held regularly since the 1770s. The tradition includes a spring market every year in June and an autumn market in September. A long row of connected wooden market stalls stands in Eriksmåla’s market square.

The historic Landsvägen through Eriksmåla dates from the late 17th century. The old route of Kungsvägen is a separate road: it was rerouted slightly to the east in Eriksmåla and today corresponds to National Road 28. For Landsvägen, its age and route through Eriksmåla are specified; for Kungsvägen, the rerouting and its present-day equivalent are specified.

Preserved Architectural Forms and Streetscapes

A preserved school complex with the character of the 1930s consists of a large school building with tall windows and a gymnasium. A preserved teacher’s residence stands nearby on its own plot. The complex thus includes different types of buildings: a school building, a gymnasium and a teacher’s residence.

The old road north of Eriksmåla still has sections with a narrow, unexpanded carriageway. South of Eriksmåla, Hantverkargatan features numerous old craftspeople’s houses with outbuildings and gardens. The northern road sections and the southern street therefore offer different perspectives on the historic surroundings: the narrow carriageway in the north, and the houses, outbuildings and gardens in the south.

Glass as Art and Craft

Bertil Vallien’s artwork Fyrbåken is located in the Eriksmåla roundabout and was inaugurated in 2011. It consists of a rectangular steel column with a basket at the top, filled with 1,000 mouth-blown glass spheres from the now-closed Åfors glassworks. A clean columnar form is thus paired with a large number of individual glass elements. Mouth-blown means that the spheres were shaped by glassblowing.

Erikshyttan was founded in Eriksmåla in 1991 by Lars Sø, Maja Cunningham and Simon Holm. New forms and techniques are created and tested at the glassworks. While Fyrbåken is a single artwork with a precisely specified form and glass origin, Erikshyttan represents the creation and testing of new forms and techniques.

Exercise in Eriksmåla

The lit exercise trail in Eriksmåla begins at the end of Vallmovägen and is 1.25 km long. It is one of four lit exercise trails in Emmaboda Municipality. Its starting point and length provide concrete details for planning your day and make the trail a distinct exercise option alongside the historic roads and building culture.
