Sommen on Lake Sommen
Accommodation in Sommen
Sommen is situated on a long bay of Lake Sommen. The lake shapes the landscape and offers opportunities for activities on and around the water. Nature trails, winter ski training and Holavedskapellet add to the range of experiences available during your stay.
Lake Sommen
Lake Sommen has an irregular shape and many bays and islands. Its water is clear and low in nutrients; in good conditions, visibility reaches 8 to 10 metres. There are 22 species in the lake. The Storröding and the lake trout are considered particularly worthy of protection. Thus, alongside the shape of the lake, its water quality and specifically named species are also in focus. Both the landscape and the lake’s natural features are relevant to a description of Sommen. Visibility describes how far you can see into the water; at the same time, it illustrates the water’s clarity.
Swimming and activities on the water
Sommen’s bathing area has a child-friendly sandy beach with a gentle slope. You can kayak between uninhabited islands on Lake Sommen. Sailing is another way to discover one of the 365 islands. Each activity offers something different: the sandy beach is the focus at the bathing area, while kayaking and sailing take you out among the lake’s islands. Fishing is also possible on Lake Sommen. You will need a fishing permit, available through the tourist office in Tranås.
Harbour and boating facilities
Sommen harbour has around 80 moorings for boats, rented out by the municipality. There is also a free ramp for launching and retrieving boats. The moorings and ramp serve different purposes: the moorings are for boats in the harbour, while the ramp provides access between land and water. There are several places to rent kayaks or canoes in the Tranås area. This means that the moorings and ramp are harbour facilities, alongside rental options for paddle boats in the Tranås area.
Nature trails and winter training
Trails leading into nature start right next to Naturum Sommen. They complement activities on the lake with opportunities to explore nature on land. In winter, skiers train at Sommen’s recreation facility. This adds a seasonal element to the activities around the lake and gives the area a specific recreational appeal during the colder months as well.
Holavedskapellet
Holavedskapellet in Sommen was originally built as a cemetery chapel. In 1978, it was modified slightly to make it more suitable for use as a place of worship. The building’s history thus encompasses both its original purpose and its later adaptation for services. If you would like to visit Holavedskapellet, you can arrange a visit by telephone in advance.
