Sandhem: Church, Lake and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Sandhem
Sandhem offers several specific attractions for a stay: the church by Lake Sandhem, hiking trails of varying lengths and landscapes, and events at Sägnernas Hus. Disc golf and the Kohagen bathing area round out the options. When choosing a hotel, you can first consider whether local history, nature or an event is the main focus of your trip. Information about the railway station and its parking facilities is also useful for getting around.
The Church and Local History
Sandhem Church is situated on the shore of Lake Sandhem. Built in the Empire style, the church was inaugurated in 1841. It is the fourth church in Sandhem and the third to be built on the same site. The church site thus brings together a long local history and a 19th-century building.
Items inside the church recall that there were several earlier churches in the area. It also houses a processional cross from Limoges in France, dated to shortly before 1200. The cross is therefore significantly older than the present church and provides a distinct historical perspective. The Skattegården local heritage farm is right next to the church.
A hiking trail also leads from the church and was probably part of the early medieval route network known as “Eriksgatuleden.” Eriksgatuleden runs through forests and along lakes and farms. In some sections, as many as twelve sunken lanes run alongside one another. The route also passes the remains of the Saxarps brännvinsbränneri. In the 19th century, it was described as one of the largest distilleries in Västergötland.
Hiking Trails and Landscapes
Kyllemo-leden starts at Sandhem railway station, is 4.7 km long and passes through the village and a mixed forest and agricultural landscape. Heneleden starts at Sägnernas hus in Sandhem and is 5.0 km long. The yellow-marked Sägnernas led is 5.7 km long, can be hiked in either direction and runs through a predominantly flat, mixed forest and agricultural landscape.
The three routes offer different lengths and starting points. Kyllemo-leden is the shortest and Sägnernas led the longest, with Heneleden in between. The difference between the lengths of the two outer routes is one kilometre. Sägnernas led is also described as predominantly flat, while Kyllemo-leden is distinguished by its starting point at the railway station and its route through the village.
Lake Sandhem covers about 84 hectares and has a shoreline of approximately 8 km. The Kohagen bathing area by the lake has a bathing jetty, a playground and a barbecue area. Another hiking option runs between Sandhem and Saxarp through a natural landscape close to the lake. The hiking trails, lake and bathing area can thus be considered different points of interest when planning your trip.
Leisure and Practical Information
The disc golf course is in the recreational area by the illuminated running trail. It has been in operation since 2022 and has twelve holes in varied, hilly terrain. This outing differs from the hiking trails, where route lengths and landscapes are the main focus.
Sägnernas Hus hosts dance evenings, markets, concerts, themed celebrations, fairs and other events for children and adults throughout the year. Individual programme items may change. Meals are available before dance events and in connection with visits to the folklore museum; booking arrangements may change. There are pitches for motorhomes at Sägnernas Hus.
Sandhem railway station has step-free access, and free parking is available at the station. Together with the different hiking trails, the church site and the offerings at Sägnernas Hus, these provide several specific themes to help you plan your stay in Sandhem.
