Culture and history in Mullsjö

Museet svenska trägubbar in the centre of Mullsjö displays the world’s largest collection of Swedish-carved wooden figurines. It includes around 1,300 objects made by approximately 250 carvers and artists. Those interested in carved wooden art will find a clearly defined cultural highlight here.

Mullsjö hembygdsgård offers a different way to explore the area’s history: this well-preserved 19th-century farmstead sits on one of Mullsjö’s hills. Its buildings date from the mid-19th century and served as a teacher’s residence. A themed collection and a historic farmstead with a former teacher’s residence offer different cultural highlights.

Margaretaparken is also located in the centre of Mullsjö. The park was laid out in the 1950s and is currently undergoing careful restoration. Its features include large rhododendron bushes, hundreds of plant species, ponds, rock gardens and paths. Guided tours of Margaretaparken can be booked. The park’s landscaped gardens complement the historic buildings and the collection of wooden figurines.

Forests and water in the surrounding area

Pine and spruce trees grow in the Ryfors Gammelskog nature reserve. Many of the trees are 150 to 200 years old, and some of the pines are more than 300 years old. The area is about three kilometres from Mullsjö, and several marked trails run along easy-to-walk paths. Ancient coniferous forest and marked trails together define the character of this excursion destination.

Nyckelås offers a different forest experience: this large deciduous forest is home to many rare species. There are two car parks and a marked trail that is about four kilometres long in total. If you want to choose between several paths and a marked route with a stated total length, Ryfors Gammelskog and Nyckelås offer different points of reference.

Lake Stråken is 24 kilometres long, with several rest areas and shelters along its shore. By contrast, pine trees on sandy soil, several lakes and numerous paths characterise the Stråkens strandskogar nature reserve. These two destinations near Mullsjö show different sides of the landscape: places to rest along the lakeshore and a network of trails through pine forest.

Ryfors Park is also near Mullsjö. It covers 375 hectares and was laid out in the style of an English landscape park. Sweden’s first six-hole golf course opened at Ryfors bruk in 1888. The park and its golf history offer different historical highlights.

Activities for different travel plans

You can canoe and kayak on Stråken. The Tidan is considered a canoe route where paddlers pass several bird sanctuaries. This gives you a distinction to consider when choosing between these water activities: on Stråken, paddling on a lake takes centre stage, while the Tidan offers a canoe route with bird sanctuaries along the way.

For winter trips, Mullsjö Skidcenter has seven ski runs and a ski school. The children’s bathing area Barnbadet is shallow and has a ramp into the water. Together with the marked trails and water destinations, these offer different activity options when planning your stay.
