Bottnaryd: Forest Trails and Church Art
Accommodation in Bottnaryd
When staying in Bottnaryd, you can include nature and cultural heritage in your plans. The trails offer different experiences: Sjöboleden passes fishing lakes and runs through old forest, while centrally located Pärlstigen follows Gårdssjön and passes near the church. Also nearby are the Bottnaryds urskog nature reserve and the paintings in Bottnaryd Church. This gives you the opportunity to decide whether you want to spend most of your trip outdoors or also explore church art and local history.
Trails through forest, by the lake and into history
Sjöboleden combines nature with historical themes. It passes fishing lakes and follows forest paths through old woodland. Signs along the trail provide information about Iron Age graves, a quarry and a Bronze Age burial cairn. At the start of the trail is a local heritage museum displaying old farming and household equipment. In spring, you can see liverworts at Blåsippeberget along Sjöboleden. This trail brings together forest, spring flora and signposted traces of the past.
Pärlstigen offers a different experience: it is centrally located in Bottnaryd, starts at the cemetery bell tower and loops around Gårdssjön. Texts along the trail explore the pearls of Frälsarkransen. There are also two bathing spots along Pärlstigen. A map brochure is available in a box at the church bell tower to help you find your way. If you are planning a walk with a religious connection, this trail brings together the lake, the route and themed texts.
Other routes differ in their focus and landmarks. Södra Vätterleden runs between Bottnaryd and Huskvarna. Kolarleden starts at Stråkenbadet, an outdoor swimming area near Bottnaryd at the southern end of Lake Stråken. Signs along Kolarleden provide information about drying flax, cement casting and tar burning. You can reach the trail on bus 131, getting off at Bottnaryd Nygatan; check the timetable for your travel date.
Old forests and nature nearby
The Bottnaryds urskog nature reserve is located near Bottnaryd. This very old coniferous forest has been shaped by age and wind. It is home to pines that are 300 to 400 years old and spruces that can live for up to 200 years. Three-toed woodpeckers are also regularly seen in the area. A marked circular trail starts at the car park, is just over two kilometres long and passes through large parts of the nature reserve.
West of the village stands Prostatallen, also known as Ullebotallen, dating from the 16th century. Nearby, Mörtsjöåsen and Skräcklagölen offer opportunities for fishing and hiking in the forest; the area is one of the Church of Sweden’s diocesan reserves. These nature experiences range from an old coniferous forest with its trees and birdlife to forest hikes and fishing opportunities.
Church and historic sites
Bottnaryd Church was built of wood after the medieval church was demolished in 1666. Anders Falck from Ulricehamn created its extensive wall and ceiling paintings between 1693 and 1695. The building’s history and its paintings provide two different historical points of interest. In summer, the church is open daily. Outside the summer season, it is open for services and on public holidays; contact the parish staff to ask about additional opening times. Check opening hours for your specific travel dates.
The former Ribbingska burial chapel is also located by Bottnaryd Church. It houses a small museum with many objects and other traces from the 17th century. Reveln open-air museum is on the headland between Lakes Gårdssjön and Västersjön, immediately west of the village of Bottnaryd. Together with the sites along Sjöboleden, it adds further connections to local history alongside the church art.
