There are several ways to shape a trip to Strömsund: trails through varied landscapes, an extensive canoe route, geology in the town centre and routes along the E45. When looking for a hotel, you can consider which of these activities you want to shape your trip. Distance, scenery and time required provide concrete points of reference for planning.

Nature trails and landscapes

Naturstigen Fågelvägen is a seven-kilometre, easy-to-walk boardwalk between the Strömsund campsite and the bird lake with an observation tower near Tullingsås. Along the way, the trail passes through moorland, marshy birch forest, dense spruce forest, shoreline landscapes and overgrown pastureland. The route thus combines a clearly stated distance with a succession of different landscapes.

The nature reserves also each have their own character. In Båthushöjden Nature Reserve, there are pine trees up to 300 years old. Per-Johansabodarna Nature Reserve is three kilometres from Strömsund Church and has hiking trails. A signposted nature trail starts at the campsite in Näsviken, passes through the reserve and continues south. For a visit close to town, Landön lies right by the centre of Strömsund and is within walking distance of the local heritage museum.

Canoe route, golf and road trips

A 170-kilometre canoe route runs along Ströms Vattudal between Ankarede and Strömsund. The canoe trip is estimated to take about a week. It includes long portages, so a canoe trolley is needed. This makes the trip quite different from a single trail such as the seven-kilometre Fågelvägen: both the longer time frame and the portages shape the planning for the canoe route.

Strömsunds golfbana is a nine-hole course in a pine forest next to the Strömsund campsite. Alternative tees on every hole create an 18-hole layout, depending on the course played. Nine holes describes the course; the 18-hole version comes from playing the alternative route. This makes it easier to understand the course layout without treating the two figures as equivalent.

Vildmarksvägen starts in Strömsund and passes through Gäddede and the Stekenjokk mountain massif, through Kultsjödalen and onwards to Vilhelmina in Västerbotten. The sequence of place names shows the direction of the route described. Strömsund is also home to Strömsundsbron, a cable-stayed bridge carrying European route E45 over Ströms Vattudal in northern Jämtland. Strömsund campsite is on the E45, one kilometre outside Strömsund. The bridge and the campsite are therefore both connected to the road, but are described as being in different locations: the bridge in Strömsund, the campsite outside town.

Geology in the town centre

Geologiska trädgården in the centre of Strömsund presents local geology through maps, cross-sectional illustrations of the Earth and the history of the mountain range. A 500-million-year-old trilobite fossil, found in limestone near Strömsund, is also on display. The fossil anchors the geological presentation in a specific find from the surrounding area. There is no admission charge to Geologiska trädgården.

The destinations offer different scales for planning a trip: a boardwalk with a stated length, a canoe trip of about a week, hiking trails in a nature reserve, a geological display in the town centre and a long-distance road starting in Strömsund. You can connect these details with the things that matter most to you during your stay.
