Kaxås: Cultural History and Landscape
Accommodation in Kaxås
Kaxås Bygdegård, the barns on Kaxbacken, and Hällängsbodarna reveal different sides of the area’s history. Slopes toward Hällsjön, wooded areas, and bodies of water add other dimensions to your stay. This means you can explore Kaxås through both its cultural landscape and its outdoor opportunities. The guidance varies depending on the time, place, and practical planning: the Bygdegård’s construction period and cultural role are relevant to a visit there, the barns reflect agriculture, while foraging and fishing involve seasonal or local conditions.
Cultural History in Kaxås
Kaxås Bygdegård was built in the 1950s and has played a central role in local cultural life over the years. A copy of the 8,000-year-old Offerdal point is on display in the Bygdegård. Check what is currently on display before your visit. Two different periods of time thus come together at this location: the Bygdegård’s building and cultural history is more recent, while the copy refers to a point several thousand years old.
Ladriket in Kaxås is part of the Offerdalsbygden area of national cultural-historical interest (Riksintresse). While the Bygdegård is a building that plays a role in local cultural life, Ladriket places Kaxås within the cultural-historical context of the aforementioned area.
The many barns on the slopes of Kaxbacken bear witness to the historical importance of agriculture in Kaxås. Hällängsbodarna is one of several fäbodar around the area; fäbodar are historic summer farm settlements. Agricultural traces can therefore be seen in two different forms: the barns on the slopes and the summer farm settlements in the surrounding area.
Landscape and Nature
Kaxås is situated on slopes that extend toward Hällsjön. The summer festival grounds of Svea Park are on the shore of Hällsjön. From Kaxås, distant Åreskutan is part of the defining landscape. The slope toward the lake and the distant mountain complement one another as different scales of the landscape: a local landform and a distant landmark.
The wooded areas near Kaxås are home to a diverse range of wildlife and birdlife. This adds a natural aspect to the landscape, alongside the slopes, the lake, and the named cultural sites.
Outdoor Activities
There are good areas for picking berries and mushrooms in Kaxås; this activity is seasonal. Fishing is also possible in lakes and flowing waters. Check local rules and permits before fishing. The two activities therefore differ clearly when it comes to planning: foraging depends on the season, while fishing depends on the applicable local rules and permits.
Directions to the Hällberget Trail
The starting point of the Hällberget Trail is in the Kaxås area. Reach it via Road 671: after passing through Åfloån, turn left at the “Hällberget” sign after about one kilometre. Road conditions can vary, so check them before setting out.
