Choosing Onsala as a destination lets you plan your stay around very different interests: coastal landscapes, exercise, water activities, culture and astronomy. The natural areas differ in their location and character, while activities vary in specific route length, number of holes, year-round opening or whether a guided visit is available. These differences offer a practical basis for first deciding what you want to focus on during your trip, and then looking for a hotel in Onsala.

Coastal landscapes and nature reserves

Svängehallar-Fjärehals Nature Reserve is a stretch of coastline on the western side of the Onsala Peninsula. Its landscapes include cliffs, beaches, heathland, coastal meadows and coniferous forest. The variety of these features shapes the coastline and offers nature lovers several distinct landscape experiences.

Hållsundsudde-Sönnerbergen Nature Reserve includes three headlands at the southern tip of the Onsala Peninsula and the surrounding archipelago. A path in the reserve leads to an old pilot lookout. Unlike the coastal stretch on the western side, the headlands and archipelago shape the area’s layout, and the path also has a specific named destination. If you want to focus on natural areas, you can choose between the varied landscapes in the west and the location at the southern end of the peninsula.

Exercise and activities

The “Presse motionsspår” exercise trail in Onsala is 2 kilometers long. This provides a named route with a specific length as an alternative to choosing between two nature reserves. The distance offers a clear planning measure: you can consider whether a precisely measured route or the varied landscapes of the nature reserves should take priority during your stay.

Kaparebanan disc golf course has 18 holes and is open year-round. Rather than a route length, this is a facility with a specified number of holes. The exercise trail and disc golf therefore represent different types of activity. You can also rent kayaks and SUPs from a Kayakomat on Utholmen in Gottskär. This adds an option on the water to the land-based activities, at a specifically named rental location.

Culture and astronomy

Onsala kyrka has a richly decorated historic interior, attributed to the prosperity of the privateering community in the 18th century. The historical connection is specific: the furnishings are associated with a particular community and period. For travelers interested in cultural heritage, the church offers a different focus from the coastal landscapes or exercise-oriented activities.

The visitor center for space technology and astronomy is located right next to the telescopes of the Onsala Space Observatory. A guided visit includes a short walk past Onsala’s twin telescopes and a tour of the 25-meter telescope. The location and the visit’s content are distinct: the visitor center is next to the telescopes, while the walk and tour are part of the guided visit. If you want to include these experiences in your travel plans, the guided visit is the relevant option.
