You can plan excursions during a stay in Fröjel around a range of interests: archaeological sites, walking trails, ancient coniferous forest, birdwatching areas and the coast each offer something different. If you’re looking for a hotel, you could start by considering whether historic sites, a particular route or the bathing area will shape your itinerary.

Historic sites in Fröjel

The fields below Fröjel Church hold remains of a Viking Age harbour and trading place. Vallhagar offers a much earlier historical perspective: the remains there indicate settlement dating back to the Iron Age, from around 200 BC. This gives you two distinct archaeological themes to choose from—the harbour and trade of the Viking Age, and the earlier traces of settlement at Vallhagar. If you’re planning to visit historic sites, you can consider them in light of their different periods.

Walking routes and directions

The Alstädeleden runs between Fröjel Church and Hajdes, passing Vallhagar and going through the Alstäde skog nature reserve. The church, the remains at Vallhagar and the ancient forest thus serve as different points of interest along the route. The Hembygdsleden Fröjel–Klinte is about 8 km long, giving you a specific distance to work with when planning a day out. The two trails offer different planning details: the Hembygdsleden has an approximate length, while the Alstädeleden is defined by its endpoints and the places along the way. There are parking areas at the start of the Vallhagarleden and by the Vallhagar house foundations.

Forest, birds and coast

Alstäde skog is a nature reserve with ancient coniferous forest and many pine trees more than 200 years old. Since the Alstädeleden passes through the area, you can combine the route with a visit to the forest. Gannarveviken is considered one of Gotland’s better birdwatching areas and offers a different focus. This makes for a clear comparison when choosing a nature experience: Alstäde skog is all about the forest and its old pines, while Gannarveviken is about birdwatching. Choose according to your interests and decide whether the forest or birdwatching theme better suits your stay.

The Djupvik bathing area in Eksta and Fröjel is just over 200 metres long and consists of a relatively shallow sandy beach with areas of stones and gravel. If the beach surface matters to you, you can consider its length and ground cover together. Djupvik thus adds a coastal destination with its own characteristics to the options.

Plan your stay around your interests

The Fröjel local heritage association has produced information material about more than 30 places to visit. With such a wide range of options, it makes sense to prioritise your interests before you go. A route with named stops offers a different focus from the beach surface at Djupvik; the forest and birdwatching themes, in turn, cater to different interests in nature. When choosing a hotel, you can first decide which of these qualities is most important to your stay. That way, your search reflects your travel plans rather than a general expectation of the place.
