Discover Svabensverk through its industrial history, walking trails, and landscape of waterways. Different priorities may shape your choice of destination: historical traces in the village, art in a natural setting, or outdoor activities. The following stops give you a concrete impression of what to expect in Svabensverk.

Industrial history in the village landscape

The Svabensverk ironworks was founded in the early 19th century by Anton Svab, a mining official from Falun. Slagstone has become a defining feature of the village. The remains of the Övre Hammaren dam and the foundations of the former forge can also be seen by the stream. These traces bring the industrial history to life at specific places in present-day Svabensverk.

The church also has a distinctive history: it was originally built as a school and converted into a church in 1884–1885. It stands just off National Road 50 at the entrance to the village. If you are coming from Falun, it is on the left-hand side of the road. The bell tower houses the 170-kilogram Kristineklockan, considered the first bell imported to Sweden from Sheffield.

Walks and trails

The Bruksrundan is a walking route through Svabensverk. Signs along the way provide information about the village’s history and nature. The route thus offers two perspectives on the village: its cultural history and natural surroundings. Trail conditions may vary; take this into account when planning your visit.

The Blue Trail starts at the community hall in Svabensverk and follows the Bruksån west to a shelter by Lake Amungen. The condition and markings of this trail may change, so check the current trail conditions before setting out. The Yellow Trail follows the Bruksån back towards Svabensverk. The Pilgrims’ Trail also passes by Svabensverk. These trail descriptions offer different directions without specifying a particular circular route.

Art and landscape

The Konst i Svaben exhibition is centred on the nature-rich Kolhusudden, which extends into Glitterdammen in the heart of Svabensverk. Visitors can stroll there and view art by local residents and established artists. Svabensverk and Hämmenåsen are of considerable scientific, cultural-historical, and scenic value. This broadens the picture of the destination beyond the history of the ironworks to include nature and landscape.

Water and outdoor activities

The Hämmen–Svabensverk bathing area has a small sandy beach. Fishing permits for Lake Hämmen are sold at Bockahästen. If you are planning a fishing trip, check the sales arrangements in advance. This keeps fishing as a distinct reason to visit, separate from a visit to the bathing area.

There are several large, elongated lakes around Svabensverk that are used for long-distance ice skating. Natural lake ice changes with the weather and wind, so this activity is weather-dependent and requires checking the ice for safety. The local community association rents out a few pairs of long-distance skates. Check in advance whether a pair is available. Cultural history, walking trails, and weather-dependent activities therefore offer different starting points for planning a stay in Svabensverk.
