Sörsjön: River Landscape, Trails and Cultural History
Accommodation in Sörsjön
Sörsjön brings together a river landscape, outdoor trails and a distinctive local history. When planning your trip, you can tailor your days to your interests, whether that means spending time by the water, hiking, enjoying winter activities or visiting cultural sites.
Water and the Village Centre
In the village centre, the picnic area lies between Kvickertjärn and Route 311. It has benches and tables, toilets, a bathing area, fishing waters, and a wind shelter with a barbecue area. You can swim in Kvickertjärn near the picnic area. The bathing area also has a jetty and a diving tower with a wooden diving board.
There are also several fishing options: the Fulan River near Sörsjön is considered one of the best waters for river fishing in Dalarna County. Several fishing waters in Sörsjön are stocked with rainbow trout, brown trout or char. The named waters offer different experiences: Kvickertjärn is known for its bathing area and picnic spot, while the Fulan and the stocked waters are relevant for fishing.
Hiking Trails and Cycling
A walking trail from Sörsjön leads up to Horrmundsåsen, with views of the village and the mountains to the west. Another hiking trail follows the west side of the river from Sörsjön to Lövåssätern, on the mountainside of Fulufjället. The destinations and the experiences described are different: views are the main feature of the trail up to Horrmundsåsen, while Lövåssätern is the destination of the hiking trail.
For a cycling trip, there is Fulufjällstrampet, a leisure ride around the Fulufjället mountain range and its national park. In the village, you can cycle between the bridges; the suspension bridge itself can be crossed on foot. It dates from 1924 and is also known as Norra bron, Hängbron and Träbron.
Winter in and around Sörsjön
The snowmobile trails around Sörsjön extend for about 80 kilometres. One trail heads east and connects to the trails near Nornäs. In winter, you can also explore Sörsjön’s forests and mountains on skis or snowshoes. The nearest ski area is on Näsfjället, ten kilometres west of the village.
Daltunet Husky offers shorter and longer tours through forest and mountain landscapes in both summer and winter. Seasonal details may vary. Alongside the trails mentioned above, tours in different seasons are another activity to choose from.
Landscape and Local History
The cultural landscape around Sörsjön is characterised by the many hayracks along the river. In spring, the riverbed near Sörsjön fills with swans, geese and the occasional crane for several weeks before the birds continue north. You can pick berries and mushrooms in the countryside free of charge.
Sörsjön Chapel was built in 1954 to designs by architect Sven A. Söderholm and was the area’s first permanent chapel. By both national and international standards, it is considered a very early example of Brutalism. The chapel contains three stained-glass windows by Folke Heybroek depicting the three articles of faith.
The story of “Mors lilla Olle” is also linked to the area: the Swedish children’s song is based on a true event that took place in 1851 in Morbäckssätern. A statue of “Mors lilla Olle” stands at the Sörsjön rest stop beside Lake Kvickertjärn. The nearby Ejforsen power station was completed in 1917 and was one of the first village power stations in northern Dalarna. A road sign points to the power station; it is visible only when driving south from Sörsjön. Check the signs before setting off.
Getting There
Dalatrafik bus route 318 serves the Sörsjön stop. As stop patterns and timetables can change, it is worth checking the current timetable before you travel.
