Leksand offers a variety of reasons to stay: historic churches and timber buildings, Midsummer, leisure activities, and routes for walking or cycling. If you’re looking for a hotel in Leksand, first consider which of these themes you want to shape your trip. The specific places, traditions, and routes can help you decide more precisely what brings you here.

Church, timber buildings and culture

Leksand Church is one of the few five-aisled churches in Sweden and is among the country’s largest rural churches. Near the church are Leksands Hembygdsgårdar, with many timber buildings dating from different centuries. These include “Gattu-stuggu,” a two-storey parstuga building from 1793. Dalarna’s oldest heritage farm is also part of Hembygdsgårdar. The five-aisled layout describes the structure of the church; by contrast, “Gattu-stuggu” is a single, specifically dated building.

Leksand Kulturhus has a permanent folk costume exhibition. Kyrkudden has been an important place for people for more than a thousand years. So, alongside architecture, folk costumes and the long-standing significance of a place are also cultural themes to explore in Leksand.

Midsummer and leisure

The Midsummer celebration in Leksand features church boats, folk musicians, ring dances, and bright summer nights. Around 30,000 visitors come to Leksand each year to celebrate; visitor numbers may vary. As another leisure option, Leksand Sommarland has 48 attractions and activities, including a water park and carousels. Individual offerings may change, so check what’s currently available before planning a visit. The festival and Sommarland offer different reasons to visit: a recurring tradition on the one hand, and leisure activities with specific examples of attractions on the other.

Walking and cycling routes

Most marked routes in Leksand follow old fäbod paths, worn by people and livestock travelling to and from the fäbodar. Limsjön runt is a newly built gravel path. Solvändan is a 4 km circular route that starts and ends at Leksandsbron in central Leksand. It runs along the Österdalälven River and the shore of Lake Siljan. The routes differ in character: the old fäbod paths reflect their historic use, Limsjön runt is defined by its gravel surface, and Solvändan by its circular route and named start and finish point.

For cyclists, Leksandsturen Nord starts at Kyrkallén in Leksand Noret and is approximately 41.3 km long. Check current conditions before setting off. Fifty villages around Leksand are spread across four different cycling tours. This means that one individual tour has a specific starting point and approximate length, while the broader area offers four tours and fifty villages. The 4 km Solvändan and the approximately 41.3 km Nord route also demonstrate the significant difference in length between routes with different formats.

Knäcke pizza in summer

In summer, Knäckerian at Leksands Knäckebröd serves knäcke pizza made with the bakery’s own crispbread. Unlike the permanent folk costume exhibition at Kulturhus, this culinary offering is seasonal; check current opening information before your visit.
