Karlskrona combines a long maritime history with UNESCO World Heritage. The city was founded in 1680, after Charles XI decided to establish Sweden’s new naval base here. As a naval city, Karlskrona is the best-preserved and most complete of the surviving European naval cities. In 1998, the World Heritage Site of Karlskrona was added to the UNESCO List. Its history is reflected in a range of visitor experiences: Swedish naval defence, the transformation of a former military area and church architecture. If you’re looking for hotels in Karlskrona, this variety can help you decide what to focus on during your trip.

Maritime history at the Naval Museum

The Naval Museum in Karlskrona is Sweden’s national museum of the history of Swedish naval defence, from 1522 to the present day. The submarine Neptun, from the Cold War era, offers a special connection to more recent history: visitors can go inside it. Access to the submarine may vary depending on museum operations.

Another exhibition is housed in the Slup and Barkass Shed in Karlskrona. It is part of the Naval Museum and focuses on former naval sloops, launches and other small boats. The history of different types of boats is the focus here, while the Naval Museum covers naval defence over a much longer period. Access to the exhibition may vary seasonally.

Stumholmen and historic buildings

Stumholmen offers insight into the transformation of a once-restricted military area: after 300 years, the area became a civilian part of Karlskrona in 1993. Today, it has homes and workplaces by the water, as well as a swimming beach. Stumholmen therefore brings both its former military use and its civilian waterside uses into focus.

Another example of Karlskrona’s architectural history is the Royal Admiralty Church, Ulrica Pia. Dating from 1685, it is one of Sweden’s largest wooden churches. Together, the museum, Stumholmen and the church offer different perspectives on the city: naval defence and boats, the transformation of a military area, and a significant church building.
