Accommodation in Holmsjö
Holmsjö offers several points of interest to help you plan your trip: a railway station in the centre of town, Bredasjön with a sports field and bathing area in the northern part, and a rich local history. If you’re looking for a hotel in Holmsjö, you can start by deciding whether train connections, the lake or historical sites are most important for your trip.
Getting here and finding your way
The railway station is in the centre of Holmsjö. Krösatågen trains take you south to Karlskrona and north to Emmaboda. From Emmaboda, there are further train connections to Kalmar, Växjö, Alvesta and Gothenburg. When planning your journey, it’s useful to distinguish between the two directions from Holmsjö and the connections from Emmaboda. This will show you which of the cities mentioned are connected by the routes from Holmsjö, and which have further connections from Emmaboda. Check the timetable for your travel dates before departure.
Bredasjön and the Holmsjö Triathlon
The sports field and bathing area on Bredasjön are in the northern part of Holmsjö. Both can be reached by taking Road 653 towards Eringsboda. The lake is four metres deep and drains into the Silletorpsån watercourse. This gives you both specific landmarks on the shore and two details about the lake itself: its depth and the watercourse it drains into.
The Holmsjö Triathlon is a triathlon competition approved by the Swedish Triathlon Federation. It takes place in midsummer on Bredasjön in Holmsjö, in Karlskrona Municipality, Blekinge. If you’re planning your trip around the event, check the details for the relevant year in advance. The triathlon section of Holmsjö Triathlon has been part of SAIK since 2014 and offers the opportunity to try triathlon, including swimming, cycling and running. Event formats may change.
Sillhövda Church and local history
Sillhövda Church offers a cultural and historical connection spanning several centuries. It was inaugurated on 9 December 1945. The church houses a medieval altarpiece dating from around 1480, considered the oldest in Blekinge. The inauguration date and the approximate dating of the altarpiece mark two distinct periods: the 20th century and the late Middle Ages. The bell tower of the former Sillhövda Church is also part of the area’s history: it was saved from a fire and moved to the cemetery.
Holmsjö was first mentioned in 1349. In a deed of gift from King Magnus Eriksson to the Bishop of Växjö, the bishop received eight villages in the parish of Fridlevstad as episcopal estates. Historically, Holmsjö was located on the highway from Växjö via Fuhr to the old town of Lyckeby. Another historical account takes us to the 19th century: according to tradition, the tanner Carl Magnus Mårdh moved to Holmsjö in 1830 and gave the local tannery his name.
