València: Gothic architecture, Turia and Albufera
Accommodation in València
València offers several distinct starting points for planning a trip: Gothic architecture, the Jardín del Turia, science and art, the l'Albufera wetland and the coast. When choosing a hotel, you can first consider which of these aspects is central to your stay. The city’s main tourist areas can be explored on foot, so plan your visits around the places and topics that interest you most.
Gothic architecture and city history
The Lonja de la Seda de Valencia is a masterpiece of European Gothic architecture. It was built largely between 1482 and 1492 under the direction of stonemason Pere Compte. Its four main sections are the tower, the Hall of the Consulado del Mar, the Orange Garden and the Hall of Columns. These names give you a concrete way to understand the layout of the building. The Lonja thus connects the appreciation of Gothic architecture with a clearly defined historical period.
Valencia Cathedral is also a destination for travellers interested in religious traditions. It houses the Holy Chalice, a vessel dating from the 1st century AD that, according to tradition, Jesus used to institute the Eucharist. The vessel’s historical dating and its traditional attribution are two distinct aspects of its significance.
Turia, science and art
The Jardín del Turia is Valencia’s main urban park. Along its route, it includes points of interest such as museums, monuments, bridges and sculptures. The Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias stretches for almost two kilometres along the former Turia riverbed. Its various centres host conferences, exhibitions, film screenings, guided tours and workshops on science, technology, nature and art; individual offerings may change.
The Museo de las Ciencias teaches the fundamentals of science and technology through workshops, activities and interactive panels. Its specific exhibition offering may change. The IVAM focuses on something different: its exhibition programme centres on the study and presentation of contemporary art movements. When planning your visit, you can therefore distinguish between scientific topics and contemporary art, without treating both offerings as the same focus for a visit.
Wetland, birdlife and regional cuisine
The l'Albufera Natural Park is listed under the Ramsar Convention as a wetland of international importance and is designated as a ZEPA special protection area for birds. About 300 bird species have been identified in the Albufera, including around 90 species with European protected-priority status. These are approximate figures and may change as surveys are updated. Visitors interested in birdlife will find a distinct nature and wildlife-watching experience here, alongside the city’s cultural attractions.
Traditional guided boat trips depart from several points along the Albufera’s shores. Departure points and arrangements may change; check the current options before your visit. The Racó de l'Olla visitor centre includes its own 50-hectare nature reserve. Check access arrangements before travelling. The Albufera’s regional character is also reflected in its cuisine: traditional dishes include Valencian paella made with rice grown in this area, as well as all i pebre with eel.
Fallas, the beach and getting around
The Fallas of Valencia are celebrated each year on 19 March by burning giant cardboard figures. As dates and programmes may vary, check the event details before travelling. Playa de la Malvarrosa offers a different attraction: it is one of Valencia’s best-known beaches, with fine, golden-coloured sand. Fallas and the beach thus appeal to different interests, which you can take into account when planning your stay.
Metro lines 3 and 5 connect the airport with Valencia; the journey takes about 20 minutes. Lines and journey times may change, so it is worth checking the current timetable. Bus lines 24 and 25, as well as the Albufera Bus Turistic, also provide connections to the l'Albufera Natural Park; check their timetables in advance too. Comparing the city’s nature and cultural attractions gives you a practical way to organise your visits and the time available for your trip.
