Algar lies on the Palancia River. Here, different interests can shape your travel plans: scenic walks, hiking trails with named destinations, historic buildings and recurring festivals. If you are looking for a hotel in Algar, deciding what you want to focus on can make planning easier. Would you like to set aside time for outdoor trails, local history or a festival? The highlights below offer specific points of reference to help you choose.

Walks and hiking trails

The Paseo del Amor, a walking area with scenic views, begins beside the old public washhouses. The route runs from the centre of Algar to the dam and is well maintained and accessible to everyone. Local trail conditions may change, so check them before your visit. Embalse de Algar, also known as the Algar Reservoir, is about a 20-minute walk from the town centre. This walking time is a guide and may vary depending on the route and conditions. If it matters to your day’s plans, check the route before setting out.

The Cordel de la Rambla de Azuebar is a local hiking trail that passes through Algar and is approximately 5 km long. The Ruta dels Aljubs has a different destination: it leads to five water cisterns built in the first half of the 20th century. The descriptions emphasize different things. For the Cordel, the approximate distance is the clear point of reference; for the Ruta dels Aljubs, it is the five cisterns and when they were built. You can choose based on the stated trail length or your interest in the cisterns.

Buildings and local culture

The Iglesia Parroquial de Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes is a church dating from the 18th century, with a stone façade. Another architectural landmark is the Arab cistern of Algar, also called the Aljibe, which has been carefully restored. The present-day Casa de la Cultura is housed in the former home of the Baron of Algar. Algar therefore offers a range of cultural points of interest: a church, a cistern and a building that was once the baron’s residence.

A Ruta del Cine has also been established in Algar. It takes visitors through all the filming locations of a drama film. Along with the church, cistern and Casa de la Cultura, the route offers another way to explore the town. The sites have different connections: architecture and the former use of buildings on one hand, and a film’s shooting locations on the other.

Festivals throughout the year

The Festes Patronals in honour of Mare de Déu de la Mercé, Sant Pere Nolasc and Sant Ramon Nonat take place every year on the weekend closest to 24 September. Check the specific festival dates before your trip. At the recurring San Antonio festival in late January, residents and visitors roast meat and sausages over a large fire. The two occasions therefore fall at clearly different times of the year: late January and the weekend near 24 September.

Els Planets recreation area

The Els Planets recreation area in Algar has barbecue facilities, stone tables and benches, and running water. These facilities offer a different focus from the hiking trails, which are described by their length or destinations. If you would also like to include a recreation area in your travel plans, Els Planets is a specific option to consider.
