Sagunto is known for its ancient structures and traces of its harbor and industrial history; Playa de l'Almardá adds a distinctive coastal landscape. Its historical story spans an Iberian settlement, Roman buildings, and former harbor facilities. Each site reveals a different side of the city’s history.

Castle and Roman Theater

Castillo de Sagunto was built on an Iberian settlement and expanded over the centuries by the Romans, Visigoths, Muslims, and Christians. In 1931, the castle was declared a national monument. During a visit, you can see, among other things, the Albacar, Plaza de Armas, the ancient Roman forum, and a historic cistern. These areas offer different perspectives on the complex, from its fortifications to traces of the Roman period.

Teatro Romano de Sagunto dates back to the 1st century. In 1896, it became the first monument on Spain’s list of buildings declared national monuments. Its dimensions can be summed up in two figures: the theater seats about 8,000 people and measures more than 90 meters in diameter. Various stage performances are still held there today, especially in summer. As the program may change, check the dates before your trip.

Archaeology, Harbor, and Industry

The Museu Arqueològic de Sagunt grew out of a collection of Iberian and Roman inscriptions, popularly known as Cuarto de les Pedres (“Room of Stones”). The current collection is housed in Casa del Mestre Peña, a Gothic building dating from the 14th century. The building displays a significant collection of archaeological objects from excavations and finds in the city. Iberian-Roman structures and an Islamic cemetery dating from the 11th century were also discovered at this historic site.

Two very different sites offer further insights into the ancient city. The musealized Via del Pòrtic preserves remains of a Roman colonnaded street, taverns, and sacred funerary buildings. The Domus dels Peixos is a Roman house dating from the 2nd century AD, with rooms arranged around an atrium. Thus, an archaeological area with a distinctly public character sits alongside a house with a clearly defined layout.

Former harbor facilities are preserved in Grau Vell. These include a small fort with a coastal watchtower, battery, warehouses, and enclosed courtyard dating from the 16th and 18th centuries. The “Sagunt i la Mar” museum is also located in Grau Vell. Its five rooms and two areas trace the development of the city and this emblematic site over the centuries. The five themed rooms are housed in a former 18th-century port warehouse—another indication of the site’s historical use.

Alto Horno número 2 adds an industrial chapter to these historical traces: the blast furnace was built in 1922 and rebuilt in the 1960s. Its musealized interior can be explored; visitors can climb between the levels and enjoy panoramic views from above. As access and visiting arrangements may vary, check them in advance.

Coastal Landscape and Natural Environment

Playa de l'Almardá is about 1,650 meters long and around 100 meters wide. Its surface consists of sand and pebbles. A belt of dunes separates the beach from the residential area, giving this stretch of coast a different character from the historic sites. The landscape is also ecologically distinctive: the beach is home to valuable flora and fauna.

The Marjal dels Moros is another natural area, located within the municipal boundaries of Sagunto and Puçol. Since October 31, 1995, it has been part of the Natura 2000 network; on that date, it was designated a Special Protection Area for Birds (ZEPA). The information about the two municipalities and the protected status places the area in its geographical and historical context without equating it with the city’s buildings.
