Torremendo: Forest, Cultural Landscape and Routes
Accommodation in Torremendo
Torremendo can be explored through several landscape themes: the woodland associated with the Sierra Escalona, the dry agricultural landscape, and routes for hiking and cycling. If you want to plan your stay around nature and outdoor activities, it is worth noting the differences between the options: the hiking route description gives its length, course and climbs, while the cycling tours focus on the route and navigation. The La Pedrera Reservoir adds another distinct landscape feature.
Forest, Wildlife and Cultural Landscape
The Sierra Escalona preserves a significant woodland area with ravines and shaded spots. It consists mainly of Aleppo pines, strawberry trees, kermes oaks, mastic shrubs and dwarf palms.
Wildlife is also part of this natural setting: the Sierra Escalona is home to birds of prey and mammals such as the genet and wildcat.
The La Pedrera Reservoir reveals a different kind of landscape. It lies in a central, water-filled depression, surrounded by gentle slopes and limestone sandstone hills.
The landscape around Torremendo is dry and shaped by agriculture. Water-saving farming methods are used there, and large areas are laid out in terraces to limit soil erosion. The crops grown may vary by season.
Hiking to Torremendo
A hiking route runs from Dehesa de Pinohermoso in the district of Arneva to Torremendo. It is a linear route offering views of the area's characteristic landscape, including farmland. The route, described by the Ayuntamiento in February 2019, is 16.25 kilometres long and rated moderate because of some climbs. Its length and difficulty provide concrete points of comparison when considering it alongside other hiking plans.
As the start and finish points are in different places, this linear route differs from a circular one. Its description dates from February 2019 and may not reflect subsequent changes. Therefore, check current trail conditions before setting out.
Cycling Tours and Navigation
An official cycling tour through Orihuela, the Sierra Escalona and Torremendo follows the CV-925 to Torremendo. It then continues between farmland towards Hurchillo. The route can thus be traced using the named places and road, without confusing the next leg with the hiking route. Check the route status and road conditions before cycling.
A GPX track for this cycling tour is available to download from the municipal route page. Check that the download is still available before setting out. Careful navigation is also recommended on the MTB route by the La Pedrera Reservoir: take precise directions for the junctions or bring a GPS track. Numerous rural access roads to huertas (market gardens) and storage sheds can lead to navigation errors; check the GPS data and route conditions before departure as well.
These routes offer different focuses: the hiking route is defined by its linear course, stated distance and climbs. The cycling tour to Torremendo and onwards towards Hurchillo is described by its roads and place names; on the MTB route, navigating the junctions is particularly important.
