Punta Prima as a travel destination has several clearly distinct features: a natural sandy beach, a seafront promenade, a municipal coastal route and historic traces of coastal defence.

Beach and Getting Around

Punta Prima Beach is a natural beach with golden sand. Its main access is via the N-332 Alicante–Cartagena road.

The beach has walkways, maritime surveillance, toilets and a restaurant. These beach services may vary seasonally. A lift makes access easier for people with reduced mobility. Before visiting, check whether the lift is operating, as maintenance may affect the infrastructure.

The beach is listed as having the Blue Flag, ISO 9001, Q de Calidad Turística and ISO 14001 certifications. If these certifications are important to your decision, check their current status before travelling.

Promenade and Coastal Route

You can walk along Punta Prima’s seafront promenade, which offers sea views. This makes it a clear option if you are planning a walk overlooking the sea.

The linear municipal coastal route, Ruta 03, runs through Mil Palmeras, Campoamor, Cabo Roig, La Zenia and Punta Prima. It starts at the car park in the Mil Palmeras urbanisation. Some route conditions may vary, and parking availability can also change. Check the situation before setting off.

Access to the beach via the N-332 and the starting point of Ruta 03 in Mil Palmeras are two different reference points: the road indicates the main access to the beach, while the car park marks the start of the route. When planning, it helps to consider these details separately.

The promenade and Ruta 03 also offer different options for a walk: the promenade is walkable and offers sea views, while Ruta 03 is a linear coastal route passing through several named places. This lets you distinguish between a walk with sea views and the course of the municipal route.

Coastal Landscape

The coastal stretch from Punta Prima to Cabo Peñas is characterised by medium-height cliffs, with material deposits occurring in this area. This is a different geographical description from that of Punta Prima Beach: golden sand characterises the beach, while cliffs and deposits define the coastal stretch.

Historical Traces

The former Carabineros barracks in Punta Prima was built in the 19th century to control coastal smuggling.

The barracks and an air-raid shelter built later were subsequently used to establish an anti-aircraft battery as part of the coastal defence plan of the Cartagena naval base. During the Spanish Civil War, these facilities housed a detachment of Artillery Regiment No. 3 from Cartagena.
