Discover Onil: Doll Culture, History and Nature
Accommodation in Onil
Onil combines a history of doll-making with historic festivals, cultural sites and trails in the Sierra de Onil. This gives your stay several possible focuses: you can explore local craft and industrial history, discover historic buildings, or get to know the landscape and its routes.
Dolls, festivals and local history
The Museo de la Muñeca is housed in the former mansion of the Payá family, the Casa de l'Hort. It shows how the doll industry developed from artisanal production through industrialisation to modernisation. Exhibits include classic and contemporary dolls, as well as a Playmobil city installation. Guian-te's Ruta de la Muñeca combines a visit to the themed museum with the opportunity to make your own doll. Exhibits may change.
The Museo de la Fiesta offers another perspective on local customs. Two rooms are devoted to the Moors and Christians festivals: costumes, information panels and photographs illustrate the celebrations, and the history of the six comparsas is also presented. The patron saint festivals have been celebrated in Onil since the 18th century. The programme includes folk dances, retretas, correfocs, the Nit de l'Olleta and fireworks. The costumed Entrada procession is scheduled for 28 April. Dates and festival programmes may change; check them before travelling during the festival period.
The Nit dels Fatxos is another feature of the festival calendar: on Christmas Eve, residents twirl esparto-grass torches through the streets, with a competition held in the Plaza Mayor. The Sala de los Reyes Magos displays costumes from Onil's Three Kings procession as well as other Christmas items, including fatxos and a nativity scene set up in a tower. The 2027 Fiestas de los Reyes Magos are scheduled for 4, 5 and 6 January. The arrival of the herald on 4 January has been designated a festival of local tourist interest. Check the dates again if travelling in a later year.
Buildings and viewpoints
According to the town council, construction of the Palacio Fortaleza del Marqués de Dos Aguas began around 1539 and was completed around 1614. The starting date of 1539 has not been fully confirmed. To the west of the palace stands the Iglesia parroquial Santiago Apóstol, completed in 1778. Its altarpiece, the Capella del Nostre Senyor Robat and the baptistery are considered particularly valuable from an art-historical perspective. The Monasterio de la Inmaculada was built between 18 February 1674 and 4 October 1687. These buildings provide different historical landmarks in the townscape, from the fortress to the monastery.
Above the old town, at the foot of the Sierra de Onil, is the Mirador Calle del Mar. From there, the view stretches across the Foia de Castalla; on sunny days, the Mediterranean can also be seen. Those interested in more recent history will find parts of the original electrical wiring, remnants of the air-raid siren, numerous photographs and a video in Onil's air-raid shelter. The collection also includes a 50-kilogram bomb.
Gardens, natural areas and trails
Casa Tápena is on the outskirts of Onil and covers 84,088 square metres, including a building, gardens, ponds, agricultural areas and a maze. The cypress maze extends over 7,000 square metres and is ideal for a stroll. More than 60 native plant species grow in the Mediterranean garden. Casa Tápena can be reached by car via the CV-803; walking from Onil town centre to the maze takes around 30 minutes. Routes and access conditions may change, so it is advisable to check the latest information before visiting.
The Paraje Ermita de Santa Ana and the Coto Escolar are also options for walks and hikes. There are several hiking trails and longer walking routes around the Paraje Ermita de Santa Ana. The recreation area has toilets, parking, drinking-water fountains, barbecue facilities, tables and benches. The Coto Escolar is a small natural area sheltered by a large stand of pine trees, with a fountain, ponds, barbecue facilities, tables and benches. It provides very easy access to the Sierra de Onil. Trail conditions can vary by season; check the state of the facilities before your visit, too.
The routes around Onil vary in length and endpoints, among other things. The 21-kilometre PR-V 87 runs from Onil via El Rebolcador and Castalla and back to Onil. The PR-V 88 is a similar length at 20.5 kilometres and runs from Onil to El Reconco and back. At 8.5 kilometres, the PR-V 90 is shorter; it runs from Fonteta Soriano via Onil to Banyeres de Mariola. Other routes extend from Casa Tápena in Onil to Castalla: the 17-kilometre PR-V 141 leads to Xorret de CatĂ. The PR-V 160 is a 32.3-kilometre section of the GR 7 from Casa Tápena to Mas de Prats in Onil.
Olive oil and rural experiences
The Museo del Aceite introduces visitors to olive oil and the tools used to produce it. Guian-te's Experiencia rural also explores this subject: it explains how olive oil is made and also includes the production of Licor herbero. Together, these experiences complement Onil's doll-making and festival traditions with insights into craft and rural activities.
