Benilloba: Nature Trails, Waterfall and Local Culture
Accommodation in Benilloba
Benilloba combines the FrainĂłs River and trails through the countryside with distinctive buildings and festival traditions. To plan your stay, you can choose between a route to the waterfall, a scenic walking trail, or architecture and recurring events. The different themes give your trip its own focus: nature and trails, local history, or festivals held on fixed dates.
Trails along the river and through the countryside
The approximately 6.5 km El Salt de Benilloba route starts in Benilloba and follows the Senda Dels Molins to the Molà del Salt, also known as the Fábrica de la Llum. There, a small waterfall forms on the Frainos River, known as Salt de Benilloba. The route thus leads from a clearly marked starting point to a destination where the mill, river and waterfall come together. The Molà del Salt is freely accessible and can be visited at any time. The descent has a masonry staircase and is accessible to everyone. Nevertheless, check local trail conditions before setting out.
Another option for a walk is the trail to Cerro del Calvario. It passes through a grove of centuries-old cypress trees and offers panoramic views of Benilloba and the comarca. While the El Salt route leads to the waterfall and mill, the cypress grove and views are the focus at Cerro del Calvario. The two trails therefore offer different landscape experiences.
Buildings and local history
The buildings also connect Benilloba with the river and the surrounding area's agriculture. The Molà del Salt was built between 1760 and 1770. At the municipal boundary between Benilloba and Penáguila, near the Molà harinero de Raimundo—in the municipality of Penáguila—is the two-arched La Canal aqueduct. One arch is small; the other is large and curved. Built in 1794, the structure carried the acequia d’Ombria over a ravine to irrigate Benilloba's orchards. The mill and aqueduct thus represent two different traces of local history: one by the waterfall, the other at the boundary between the two municipalities.
The Iglesia Parroquial de Benilloba is a Neoclassical church. Its floor plan is shaped like a Latin cross; the three-bay nave is complemented by side chapels. In the deep presbytery, the barrel vault is decorated with rosettes and frescoes. The frescoes depict four biblical heroines and Saint Juan de Ribera. These architectural and artistic details give the church its distinctive character and complement the older engineering structures with an example of religious architecture.
The historic town center is also home to a tradition of ceramic street shrines. They usually depict the saint to whom the respective street is dedicated. Look out for these small images as you walk through the town center: unlike the large buildings, they are part of the streetscape and each is associated with a specific street.
Festivals and regional products
The traditional dances in honor of the Virgin Mary take place on the first weekend of September. From Thursday to Sunday, the “Dansà de Benilloba” is danced in traditional dress in Plaza del Omet. Anyone who wants to join in is welcome. The festival therefore brings together a specific time of year, a central square and an open invitation to dance.
The festivals in honor of Sant Xotxim are represented by three fila groups: “Moros del Castillo,” “Filà Cristianos de La Palmera” and “Moros del Arrabal.” The Moros i Cristians tradition in honor of Sant Xotxim takes place every August and includes the humorous Nit de l’Olla. Since dates and programs may change, check the specific festival dates when planning your trip.
On Good Friday, Benilloba's traditional market features demonstrations and the sale of regional products. These include cured meats, local dishes, cheese, wine, olive oil and the traditional Mona de Pascua. The market offerings complement the festival days with regional food and products. If you are visiting Benilloba for a particular event, you can combine its date with the scenic and cultural attractions you plan to visit during your stay.
