For a stay in Cánovas, local history, Esparto crafts and local traditions offer plenty of ways to explore. There is also a route linked to the Vereda de Los Cánovas and the nearby Sierra de Carrascoy. When planning your trip, you can first decide whether you are most interested in history, the Esparto collection, a festival date or the landscape.

Religious Architecture and Local History

The Ermita de San Francisco de Asís in Los Cánovas is a religious building dating from the early 20th century. It is also considered the settlement’s first religious building. Los Cánovas was established around the 17th century along the important route from Cartagena to Lorca. The settlement’s origins and the construction of the hermitage are therefore several centuries apart: its history can be explored through both its connection to the older route and its later local religious history.

Esparto Crafts at the Museum and Festivals

The Museo del Esparto is located in the local cultural centre. Its collection comprises around 500 pieces displayed across two rooms covering approximately 60 square metres. Cándido García created and designed the entire collection. The Esparto sculptures include a donkey with a cart, a Nativity scene and various Holy Week processional groups. These examples show different motifs within the same material and craft tradition. Check the museum’s current access arrangements before visiting.

The connection to Esparto is also evident during the procession on Holy Saturday afternoon in Los Cánovas. Processional groups and figures made from Esparto, created by local resident Cándido García, are displayed. Patron saint festivals in honour of Saint Francis of Assisi take place in early October. The two occasions offer different dates to plan around: Holy Saturday for the procession and early October for the patron saint festivals. Specific programme dates may vary from year to year, so check the dates for your intended year of travel.

Route, Sierra and Archaeological History

The PR-MU 98 route runs from Villa Eulalia to Cuevas de Reyllo and crosses the Vereda de Los Cánovas near the houses of Emilia. If you plan to take this route, check the current signage and trail conditions in advance. Los Cánovas is also near the Sierra de Carrascoy, an area known for leisure activities and excursions.

The area’s archaeological connections also add to its story: the Cueva Pagán near Los Cánovas contains Roman-era archaeological sites, and further Roman sites are located near Los Muñoces. These places and the route appeal to different interests: archaeological history on the one hand and a named route on the other. You therefore do not need to consider them as a single excursion destination.

Planning Priorities for Your Trip

If a particular festival is central to your trip, distinguish between the procession on Holy Saturday afternoon and the patron saint festivals in early October. Other interests include the hermitage, the Museo del Esparto collection, the archaeological sites and the landscape around the Sierra.
