Zudaire offers several ways to plan a stay: the architectural history of the Church of San Andrés, the swimming spot on the Urederra and a circular route through Améscoa Baja. These experiences are quite different: in Zudaire, the focus is on historic buildings; at the river, on swimming and trout fishing; and the circular route also takes in the region’s villages and landscape. You can plan your time according to whether you are especially interested in architecture, the river or a longer walk.

Architectural history and local sights

Today’s Church of San Andrés in Zudaire is an extension of an earlier Gothic church. The former apse and a pointed-arch window have survived from that predecessor. The church was rebuilt and extended at the end of the 17th century. The apse and window are therefore surviving elements of the older church, while the rebuilding and extension mark a later phase of construction.

The Molino de Zudaire is also part of the village’s history: the mill was later converted into a sawmill. Local sights also include a medieval bridge. The school building is known as “antiguas colonias”.

The Crucifijo de Zudaire, also known as the Crucero de Zudaire or Kruzifizio de Zudaire, is a Gothic stone cross dating from the 16th century. It stands on a prominent bend in the Estella–Olazagutia road, between kilometre markers 15 and 16, at the upper edge of the village below Urbasa. The cross, which stands outdoors, is described as accessible and open to visitors.

Urederra: river swimming and trout fishing

The swimming spot on the Urederra in Zudaire is a river bathing area created by a small dam. A marked footpath leads there from a designated car park. Access is regulated by a visitor limit and rules of use. Check the current access conditions before your visit, as regulations may change.

The public natural trout fishing area Coto de pesca natural de Zudaire (URE-2220-T) is also located on the Urederra near Zudaire. It is designated for the 2023–2027 seasons. If you plan to fish there, check the season rules in force for the dates of your visit.

Circular route through Améscoa Baja

The circular route through Améscoa Baja can be started in Zudaire and is 23.36 kilometres long in total. It follows wide tracks and paths with easy-to-walk surfaces and passes through extensive oak and holm oak forests. This distance refers to the entire circuit, not just a section near the village. When planning the route, you can consider Zudaire as a possible starting point while also taking into account the tour’s regional scope.

The proposed circular route links the region’s villages and offers insight into customs such as calera and carbonera, as well as civil and religious architecture. Alongside woodland and path sections, the tour therefore also covers regional culture. Vegetation and trail conditions may vary by season; check current conditions before setting out.

Getting oriented

Zudaire lies beside the Estella–Olazagutia road (NA-718), near kilometre marker 14.6. Check local road details before travelling. The information about the Crucifijo places it on a prominent bend between kilometre markers 15 and 16, adding a specific landmark to these directions.
