Entrena – Culture, Craft and Landscape
Accommodation in Entrena
Entrena can be explored through a range of themes: church and monastery architecture, a round Guardaviñas hut, textile crafts and the landscape of the municipality. If you are planning a hotel stay, these different points of interest can help you shape your visits to suit your interests.
Churches and architectural history
The architectural history of the Church of San MartĂn began in 1545. It was originally built as the Church of Santa MarĂa la Nueva; its dedication was later changed to San MartĂn. The rectangular ashlar-stone building has a single nave with four bays. Chapels lie between the buttresses, and the apse ends in an octagonal section. The bays divide the nave into successive sections—a useful term for understanding the spatial layout described here.
The main altarpiece is another notable historical feature of the church: JosĂ© de San Juan y MartĂn, Juan de Peralta and Juan Zapater MartĂnez created it between 1702 and 1709. This means that different periods can be seen in the same building: the church’s construction from the 16th century onwards and the creation of the main altarpiece in the early 18th century.
The Santa Clara Monastery was founded in 1505. Its features include Baroque altarpieces and 16th-century frescoes. The 18th-century Hermitage of Santa Ana stands next to an archaeological site with Celtiberian and Roman connections. The surviving remains there date from the Iron Age to the 5th century AD. The hermitage and the archaeological site thus bring together two distinct historical reference points: an 18th-century religious building and a much earlier history of settlement.
A Guardaviñas hut and textile crafts
The Chozo de Cuatro Cantos is a round, municipally owned Guardaviñas hut—a shepherd’s or vineyard hut. It lies on the Camino de Entrena a Logroño and can be reached from the town centre along this route. As an example of vernacular architecture, it is considered to have ethnographic and landscape value. Its shape and classification as a Guardaviñas distinguish it from Entrena’s churches and monasteries.
Espacio Textil Creativo Artelar is a textile workshop in Entrena where fabrics are made on handlooms. Artelar preserves traditions of wool combing and spinning, as well as dyeing with natural dyes. Its training programme includes high- and low-warp looms, knotted textiles, felt-making and frame-woven tapestries. If you would like to include the workshop in your visit, check the arrangements for visiting before you travel.
Landscape and getting around
The municipal area is described as a plain at an altitude of between 500 and 600 metres. Small ravines have shaped it into hills, residual hilltops and open plains. The RĂo Antiguo flows through Entrena and irrigates the vegetable gardens there. The terrain and the irrigated farmland are two distinct aspects of the landscape.
A metropolitan bus service connects Entrena with Logroño. As timetables can change, check the latest times for your trip. A weekly market is held on Plaza El Coso on Mondays. The RomerĂa de la Hermedaña celebrates the abolition of the tribute of 100 virgins. These details offer practical pointers for planning without assuming a specific event date.
