Villanueva de Campeán brings together church architecture, historic routes and landscape connections. The Iglesia de Santa María del Soto dates from the 13th century, and the Iglesia Parroquial San Juan Bautista from the 16th century. The two churches offer a chance to compare different floor plans; the routes reveal further historical and landscape connections to the town.

Comparing Church Architecture

The Iglesia de Santa María del Soto has a single nave and a main chapel. A single-nave floor plan brings the church interior together in one main nave; the main chapel forms a separate architectural area. This makes it easy to grasp the layout without suggesting that the later building shares the same design.

The Iglesia Parroquial San Juan Bautista dates from the 16th century and falls between the Gothic and Renaissance periods. Four old arches on fluted columns with Ionic capitals divide the church into three naves. A reredos by Ruiz de Zumeta is also part of its furnishings. The two churches therefore offer a concrete architectural comparison: a single nave and a main chapel on one side, and three naves divided by arches on the other.

Convento de Nuestra Señora del Soto

Franciscans of the Third Order founded the Convento de Nuestra Señora del Soto in 1406. Alfonso de Illescas, the Bishop of Zamora at the time, confirmed its foundation in 1407. The two dates mark different steps: first the foundation, then its confirmation. A description from 2024 portrays the Convento as abandoned and in a ruinous condition. If you plan to approach the building, check for any access restrictions beforehand.

Camino, Calzada de la Plata and Finding Your Way Around

The Camino de Santiago approach to Villanueva de Campeán from El Cubo passes through vineyards and by small holm oaks. The municipal area lies on the slope of Cerro de La Esculca. If you plan to take this route, bear in mind that trail conditions may change and check them before setting out.

The Calzada de la Plata runs through Villanueva de Campeán along the Cañada Real and continues about 320 metres from the Convento de Santa María del Soto. The historic route reaches the town centre, where the street name Calle Calzada has been preserved. The Iglesia Parroquial San Juan Bautista is also mentioned in connection with the Vía de la Plata between El Cubo de Tierra del Vino and Zamora. The Camino highlights the scenic approach, while the Cañada Real and Calle Calzada help you find your way around the Calzada.

Festive Day and Regional Wine

Villanueva de Campeán is in the Tierra del Vino comarca in the province of Zamora. Wine bearing the Denominación de Origen “Tierra del Vino” designation is one of the town’s gastronomic highlights, adding a regional culinary connection to its churches and routes. San Juan Degollado is celebrated in Villanueva de Campeán on 29 August. If you are travelling for the festival, check the programme for that year in advance.
