Ferreras de Arriba lies in the central part of the Sierra de la Culebra, which is considered a protected natural area. The municipal area brings together natural features and traces of local history: mills along the stream, Celtic and Roman remains, traditional architecture, and the La Filandorra tradition. If you would like to combine nature and cultural heritage during your stay, you will find different areas of interest here to help plan your trip. You can first consider whether to focus mainly on trails and scenery or on the town’s cultural heritage.

Scenery and trails in the Sierra de la Culebra

The Camino de los Castaños is accessible via the Ferreras de Arriba exit from the N-631. It runs along the slopes of La Culebra among pine and chestnut trees. The area is considered suitable for hiking in autumn; conditions and access may vary. Check road conditions and signage before setting out, as they may change. The Ermita del Cristo de las Aguas offers a place to rest, with panoramic views of Ferreras de Arriba.

The Sendero de los Castros Castillán y Valdemera has a different focus: the Castro del Castillán is the first stop on the route, which leads to the Castro de Valdemera. This brings two different themes together: the Camino de los Castaños is characterized by its pine and chestnut trees, while the Sendero links archaeological sites. This distinction can help you tailor your outing to your interest in scenery or history.

Mills, traces of history, and architecture

A stream flows through the town center, its water powering numerous mills. The stream and mills are directly connected, giving the town’s history a tangible link to the landscape. Older settlements and transport routes are also part of the local heritage: remains of Celtic dwellings and of an ancient Roman road have been preserved in Ferreras de Arriba.

Examples of traditional architecture using earth construction and slate can be found in the municipal area and its surroundings. Cultural heritage resources also include the Monumento al Labrador, made of bronze-colored iron. The Ermita del Cristo de Las Aguas dates from the 20th century, and the Iglesia de la Asunción has a Baroque altarpiece. These features are quite distinct: from the materials used in traditional building styles to a named monument and a work of religious art.

La Filandorra and festival dates

La Filandorra is a medieval tradition that is also found in other places in the Aliste and Sanabria areas. In Ferreras de Arriba, it is associated with December 26; Obisparra is also known as an earlier alternative name. The performance features four characters in two groups. The Guapos are el Galán and la Madama, who is played by a man dressed as a woman. The Feos are la Filandorra and el Diablo.

In addition to La Filandorra, the festival of San Blas is associated with the first week of February. The festivals of the Virgen de Asunción and San Roque take place on August 14, 15, and 16. These dates give you different opportunities to plan a trip around a festival. Check the date in advance if it is important to your plans.

Visiting Los Corralones

Visits to Los Corralones – Centro de Interpretación de la Vida Pastoril must be arranged by appointment with the town hall. Confirm the appointment with the town hall before your visit, as the arrangements may change. This allows you to include this stop in your travel plans without confusing it with the landscape and cultural attractions described as freely accessible.
