Places and landmarks to help plan your trip

El Cubo de Tierra del Vino can be understood through several specific themes: the Vía de la Plata passes through the town, the parish church of Santo Domingo de Guzmán reopened to worshippers in 2024 after extensive renovation, and the Roman mansio of Sabaria is part of the town’s history. Other features include traditional wine cellars and named landscape features within the municipality. If you are looking for a hotel, these points of interest can help you shape your trip around the pilgrimage route, cultural history or landscape. A route, a church and a woodland each offer a different way to discover the town.

The Vía de la Plata and Crucero de Piedra

The Vía de la Plata passes through El Cubo de Tierra del Vino, the first town on this route in the province of Zamora. The Crucero de Piedra is located in Plaza de la Iglesia and is associated with the Salamanca–El Cubo de Tierra del Vino and El Cubo de Tierra del Vino–Zamora stages. It is made of stone and features a small depiction of Saint James of Compostela on a stone pedestal. Typical scallop shells decorate it all around. The stage information and the monument answer different orientation questions: the route designation identifies the two sections, while the pedestal, depiction and shells describe the crucero itself. For travellers following the Vía de la Plata, the route through the town and a specific landmark in the square go hand in hand. Luggage transport by Torre de Sabre is listed for the stages between Salamanca and Zamora. Check before travelling whether this service is currently available.

Parish Church of Santo Domingo de Guzmán

The parish church of Santo Domingo de Guzmán is located in El Cubo de Tierra del Vino. On 26 February 2024, after being closed for more than a year and undergoing extensive renovation, it reopened to worshippers. As part of the work, the altar slab was given a new marble base, or was fitted with new marble. The altar, thereby understood as a new altar, was consecrated in honour of the deity. Unlike the landmarks associated with the pilgrimage route, the focus here is on the renovation itself.

Roman connections, wine cellars and landscape

El Cubo de Tierra del Vino lies within the area of a former Roman mansio called Sabaria. The Romans built the Mansio Sabaria in the area in connection with the Torre de Sabre. This Roman connection adds a much older local reference to the church’s reopening in 2024. The traditional wine cellars have a centuries-old history and are privately used. There are also landscape features: the Arroyo de San Cristóbal runs through the entire municipal area; Majada Gorda is public-use woodland No. 80 within the municipality. Unlike the church and crucero, which can be considered individual structures, the stream and woodland point to different landscape features within the municipality. For the Arroyo, its course through the entire municipal area is what matters; for Majada Gorda, it is the woodland’s specific name and number.
