Fornillos de Fermoselle is located in the Arribes del Duero Natural Park. The cork oak forest, paths along the Duero and traces of pottery give the village a distinctive natural and cultural heritage. When choosing where to stay, you can weigh up whether landscape, possible wildlife sightings or the history of local crafts is your priority.

Cork Oak Forest and Nature

The Alcornocal de Valduyán, also known as Jebreral de Fornillos, is the densest and purest cork oak grove in Fornillos de Fermoselle, as well as the largest and best-preserved cork oak forest in the province of Zamora. From the road between Fermoselle and Fornillos de Fermoselle, the Alcornocal can be reached via a track suitable for bicycles. Check its condition locally before planning your journey.

Trails, River Views and Wildlife Watching

Stage 30 of the Camino Natural begins in the village centre. It leaves Fornillos along the Camino de los Arrieros, a traditional route to Pinilla de Fermoselle. The gentle but steady descent offers views of the Portuguese bank of the Duero.

In the area around Stage 29, binoculars may help you spot Egyptian vultures, griffon vultures and the rare black stork Ciconia nigra. These sightings are seasonal and not guaranteed. The stage also offers the option of detouring to the Los Regatos viewpoint, from which you can see the river in its entirety. The difference between the routes is clear: Stage 30 focuses on the starting point, route and river views, while Stage 29 offers the possible viewpoint detour and seasonal birdwatching.

The signposted Ruta Hornos de la Rieta la Encina connects Fornillos de Fermoselle with the Hornos de Rieta la Encina. Check trail conditions and signage locally. This makes it possible to choose routes according to their different highlights: river scenery, a viewpoint, possible wildlife watching or a connection to the kilns.

Pottery and Local History

The pottery kilns are a particularly important part of Fornillos’s ethnographic heritage: they are an important cultural legacy and gave the village its name. The Alfar de Rieta la Encina comprises a kiln and clay pits where clay was extracted. If you plan to visit, ask locally about access.

A hiking trail leads to a small meadow on the outskirts of Fornillos de Fermoselle. There, a mould for ploughs was once carved into a granite outcrop. This historical evidence of plough-making adds another facet to the local heritage alongside the pottery kilns.

Local Produce

Local production is also part of Fornillos’s character: residents make wine, jams and other local products. Together with the cork oak forest, routes and traces of traditional crafts, these offer a clear picture of the themes you can build your stay around.
