Montejo de Tiermes, in the province of Soria, is closely connected with the archaeological heritage of Tiermes. The archaeological site can be reached from Montejo de Tiermes in about ten minutes; actual travel time may vary depending on the route and conditions. When planning your trip, you can explore archaeological remains, the history of church architecture, and the landscape as distinct areas of interest.

Tiermes: Archaeological Site and Museum

Tiermes is a cultural asset of special interest designated as an archaeological zone. Its protected status was recorded in the BoletĂn Oficial del Estado on October 1, 1999. Roman remains include an aqueduct carved into the rock, with a 150-meter-long underground passage. A seating area also carved into the rock offers a particular reason to consider how the site was used: it may have served as a theater, a Celtiberian temple, or a meeting place.

The Museo Monográfico de Tiermes displays finds from the excavations: weapons, bronze jewelry, and pottery dating from the 6th to the 3rd century BC. Alongside these objects, the museum also features Roman remains and medieval artifacts. Information panels, display cases, pedestals, and models explain the history of Termes, the excavation findings, and the study of the materials discovered. Individual finds are thus presented alongside the question of how they fit into the history of the archaeological site.

Romanesque and Gothic Architectural History

The Romanesque Ermita de Santa MarĂa de Tiermes lies within the archaeological site and is included in its heritage protection designation. It was declared a historic-artistic monument by Royal Decree 1748/1982 of May 28. Its architectural details include paired columns with double capitals, decorated with plant and figurative motifs.

The church of San Cornelio and San Cipriano in Montejo de Tiermes also combines different phases of construction. Its Renaissance atrium has two arches built in 1534; at the same time, the church preserves four round arches from the earlier Romanesque porch. The tower and the main chapel are Gothic, and the chapel has a star-vaulted ceiling. The rest of the nave dates from the 17th century. These elements make the church’s different periods clearly visible side by side.

Watchtower, Necropolises, and Landscape

The watchtower of Montejo de Tiermes stands within the village, attached to a house, and rises more than ten meters above a rocky outcrop. It is thought to have provided a line of sight to the watchtowers of Liceras and the presumed watchtower of Torresuso. The area around the archaeological site, in the Carratiermes area, also contains a cremation necropolis with Celtiberian and even pre-Celtiberian grave structures dating from the Bronze Age, before the 4th century BC.

Another necropolis lies along a stretch of road between the museum and Valderromán. Its more than 40 graves are carved into the rock and date from the 9th to the 11th century. The two necropolises therefore represent different periods and burial practices. For a different perspective on the municipality, the El Hoyo route follows the Río Pedro through a striking canyon with lush vegetation. The El Hoyo area is also home to a significant colony of griffon vultures along the Río Pedro, through the area of Cuevas de Ayllón.
