Alcubilla de Avellaneda can be explored through very different evidence of its history and landscape. A Roman road, churches, a former wine press building and the Ruta de las Fuentes each offer a distinct focus. This lets you experience historic architecture, archaeological traces and the landscape along a route as different facets of the destination.

Roman road and architectural history

The Roman road from Osma to Clunia crosses the municipality of Alcubilla de Avellaneda. It is recorded in the Itinerarium Antonini, a Roman document from the 3rd century. Alongside the later buildings, it provides evidence of ancient routes. The road offers a different way to explore history than the individual buildings: the focus here is on a recorded road system and its written mention.

Churches and archaeological traces

The Iglesia de Santa Mª Magdalena was built in 1756 as a Renaissance church. An older tower was used as a bell tower during its construction. In addition to the Baroque main altarpiece, the church has four other altars dedicated to Santo Cristo, the Virgin Mary, San Sebastián and San Antonio de Padua. Its construction date, tower and altars bring together different architectural and religious references in one building.

The Ermita del Cristo del Campillo is a rectangular Renaissance church. It was built in 1775 using materials from an older, ruined hermitage. Its walls also contain Roman funerary steles from the 1st century BC. This building thus brings together the later history of the hermitage and archaeological evidence from antiquity.

Palace, wine tradition and Guardaviñas

The Palacio de los Avellaneda offers a different historical focus. Lope de Avellaneda y Delgadillo, a royal favourite, had it built as a summer house in 1575. Its function as a summer house distinguishes the palace from the religious buildings and makes it another chapter in the local architectural history.

The village’s former wine press was restored and converted into the Museo Enológico-Lagar to preserve and interpret traditional winemaking. The building dates from the first half of the 19th century and was constructed based on Roman-period models. Here, architectural history and wine tradition come together: the building reflects older architectural models, while its history of use relates to winemaking in the village.

The Guardaviñas is also connected with the history of wine growing. The tradition of vineyard watchmen was lost in the 1950s; the surviving Guardaviñas was restored in 2007 and is now in good condition. This timeline shows that the original tradition and the restored structure represent different aspects of this history.

Ruta de las Fuentes and landscape

The Ruta de las Fuentes is 13.4 kilometres long and leads to 18 signposted and restored springs. They are part of a network of more than 100 springs in the municipality. The route passes rivers and streams, poplar-lined banks, grain fields, vineyards, and forests of holm oaks and juniper trees. The spring route thus combines a specific distance with several distinct landscape features.

The variety of landscapes differs markedly from the historical focus of the churches, hermitage and other buildings. If you are deciding what to focus on during your stay, the Ruta de las Fuentes offers a clearly defined route, while the buildings and their history provide a distinct cultural focus.

Camino del Cid

Alcubilla de Avellaneda is listed under El Destierro for five ways of getting around: gravel cycling, hiking, cycling, mountain biking (BTT/MTB) and motorised tours. Opposite the hermitage in the village is a small rest area for travellers on the Camino del Cid. The listed activities and rest area give the Camino context its own place alongside the spring route and historic sights.
