Berlanga de Duero: Castle and Renaissance Architecture
Accommodation in Berlanga De Duero
Berlanga de Duero is defined by its architectural and cultural history: in 1981, the town was declared a historic-artistic site. The castle, collegiate church, monastery and palace each offer distinct architectural features; the San Baudelio Interpretation Centre presents the history of a hermitage. If you are looking for a hotel for a cultural trip, you can plan around the topics that interest you most.
Castle and historic buildings
At Berlanga de Duero Castle, visitors can explore the courtyards, walls and casemates and enjoy panoramic views of Berlanga and the surrounding area. The complex thus brings together specific architectural features and views of the town and its surroundings. The Picota stands outside the town, near the Aguilera Gate, and adds another site to the picture of its historic heritage.
Collegiate church and monastery
The foundation stone of the Collegiate Church of Nuestra Señora del Mercado was laid on 22 June 1526. In the centre, in the Yuberías quarter, stands the Conceptionist monastery, a notable example of Spanish Renaissance religious architecture. The monastery also has a medieval Romanesque tympanum with surviving traces of polychromy. Thus, a precisely dated start to construction sits alongside an art-historical detail from another period.
The palace and its façade
The palace in Berlanga de Duero preserves a monumental ashlar façade with three storeys and a tall gallery on the top floor. Ashlar masonry refers to a wall surface made of worked stone blocks. The façade’s design reflects the Renaissance style of the 16th-century ducal villas. Above the main portal, which has a flat lintel, are the coats of arms of the Tovar and Enríquez families. Unlike the monastery’s tympanum, the emphasis here is on the layout of a multi-storey façade with a gallery and portal.
San Baudelio: architecture and interpretation
The San Baudelio Interpretation Centre in Berlanga de Duero uses information panels, models and an audiovisual presentation to explain the lost splendour of the hermitage, whose paintings were taken away. It also provides a virtual reconstruction of what the hermitage is thought to have originally looked like. The building itself is in Casillas de Berlanga, in the area around Berlanga de Duero, and is considered one of the finest examples of Mozarabic architecture on the Iberian Peninsula. The centre and the hermitage have different roles: one presents the history and a possible reconstruction of its original appearance, while the other is the architectural building itself.
