Valle De Tabladillo – Valley, Architectural Heritage and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Valle De Tabladillo
Valle de Tabladillo lies on a steep slope in a deep valley carved by a stream. The stream rises in Castroserracín and drains into the Duratón. The townscape features narrow streets and houses with stone ground floors, upper floors of timber framing combined with stone or adobe, and wooden solanas. Those interested in rural architecture can take in the streets, building materials and house styles together here.
Valley, Viewpoints and Nature
The El Cotanillo viewpoint lies opposite the town and offers panoramic views of the entire riverside landscape and the village. Fruit trees grow in the surrounding area, where a variety of birds can also be spotted. The viewpoint combines views of the valley with the townscape, while the fruit trees and birdlife are further natural features of the area.
El Fraile and El Pingocho de San Juan are also defined by specific heights: El Fraile is about 15 metres high and housed a beehive for many years. El Pingocho de San Juan is about 40 metres high, and a juniper grows on it. These details each describe a distinct, named feature of the landscape.
At El Buquerón, green ivy protects a spring that feeds Fuente Santa. Together with the viewpoint and the named high points, it adds to the varied picture of the local landscape: views, vegetation, birdwatching and springs are all part of it, as are the valley and stream.
Townscape and Tradition
The Church of Nuestra Señora de la Concepción was built using fragments of the Romanesque cornice from the Ermita de San Juan in the abandoned settlement of Pajares. These reused elements connect the church with a Romanesque predecessor at another site. For anyone exploring local architectural history, the origin of these fragments is therefore a specific point of reference, as well as the church itself.
Another architectural context nearby is Barrio de Arriba. There, houses made of adobe and wood retain their galleries, roof overhangs and timber structures. These architectural forms complement the picture of the stone ground floors, timber-framed upper floors and wooden solanas found in the townscape of Valle de Tabladillo.
A revived local tradition is the “remate”. It takes place every second weekend in November after the procession of the Virgen de los Remedios. Sweets made by residents are offered to the Virgin and then auctioned. If you would like to plan your trip around this custom, check the exact event date before making plans.
Hiking and Cycling Routes
There are trails along the Arroyo del Valle that are suitable for hiking and cycling. One named route is El Corazón de las Pedrizas, also known as El Cañón del Fraile: it is 6.6 kilometres long and runs between Valle de Tabladillo and Castroserracín. Its difficulty level is low. The route follows the Arroyo del Valle through a geologically interesting gorge that serves as a refuge and habitat for griffon vultures.
For choosing a route, this one offers a different combination of distance, difficulty and scenery from the BTT route Carrascal del Río y alrededores. The latter is 41.6 kilometres long, has a high difficulty level and can be ridden year-round. Particular care is needed on the trails between Castrojimeno and Valle de Tabladillo. The distance and difficulty levels help you consider the two routes as distinct options when planning.
North of Valle de Tabladillo, a driving route links Sacramenia, Fuentidueña, Valtiendas, Carrascal del Río and San Miguel de Bernuy via several roads. It provides a distinct regional point of reference alongside the hiking and cycling routes around the Arroyo del Valle. When choosing your destination, you can focus on the themes that interest you most: the traditional townscape and architectural history, the November custom, or a route and its specific features.
