Cultural Heritage and Art in Valdesimonte

Valdesimonte is within the geographical area where Gacería is spoken, an item of intangible cultural heritage of Castilla y León. The tradition originated in the municipality of Cantalejo and was initially associated with the manufacture of threshing equipment, an important activity for centuries.

The parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción was built in the Romanesque style. Later restorations changed its original appearance. Inside is a Baroque high altar with surviving depictions of Saint Peter and Saint Paul, created by Juan Gil in 1595. The Romanesque style of the church building and the Baroque altar furnishings thus stand side by side as distinct art-historical features.

The parish church in Valdesimonte was historian Diego de Colmenares’s first parish appointment; he remained there from 1611 to 1617. This connection gives the town a specific link to the historian’s life, in addition to its architectural and artistic history.

The hermitage of San Roque is located on the edge of the town. It has a square floor plan, and its entrance is on the north side. There is also a permanent exhibition of contemporary sculptures in the town center. The town’s artistic and architectural features therefore range from religious buildings and altarpieces to contemporary sculpture.

Streamside Landscapes and Regional Nature

Valdesimonte lies on the slope of a gentle hill beside a stream. Typical riparian woodlands can be found in areas irrigated by streams. Visitors can enjoy a pleasant walk along the stream and listen to the flowing water. The hillside location, stream and riparian woodlands are distinct elements of the local landscape; the walk focuses particularly on the watercourse.

Las Hoces del Río Duratón Natural Park lies in the wider region around Valdesimonte. Established in 1989, it lies entirely within the Comunidad de Villa y Tierra de Sepúlveda and includes the municipalities of Carrascal del Río, Sebúlcor and Sepúlveda. The natural park offers opportunities for canoeing on the Burgomillodo Reservoir and hiking on numerous trails.

For trip planning, the nature-related activities can be distinguished by their geographical setting: the walk along the stream is in Valdesimonte; canoeing on the Burgomillodo Reservoir and hiking on the numerous trails are activities in the natural park in the wider region.
