Urueñas: Routes, Buildings and Landscape
Accommodation in Urueñas
In Urueñas, architectural history, routes and landscape come together as you plan your trip. The Iglesia de San Juan Bautista and other religious landmarks offer concrete points of interest for exploring the area’s culture. Outside, pastures, woodland and a pine forest shape its described environmental features. The routes have distinct destinations, including the Route of the Springs, paths to shepherds’ huts and the Sendero por el Cañón de Bálsamos. This lets you choose the focus of your stay according to your interests.
Buildings and Religious Landmarks
The Iglesia de San Juan Bautista is a monumental stone building with three naves and corresponding choir areas, which are covered by ribbed vaults. The southern nave was converted into an atrium. The church was built in the post-medieval Gothic style, which was widespread in the Segovia area in the 16th century. This description therefore places the building within a specific regional style.
The Ermita del Santo Cristo del Humilladero is located in the district of Barrionuevo. It was built in 1639, remodelled in 1882 and restored in 1985. The crosses of the local Via Crucis are preserved along Calle Real. Outside Urueñas are the remains of the former Ermita de Nuestra Señora de Bálsamos. These landmarks differ both in their location and in their historical context.
Landscape and Routes
Urueñas’s key environmental features include pastures on rocky limestone slabs, holm oak stands with undergrowth and a pine forest.
The Sendero por el Cañón de Bálsamos runs through the characteristic landscape of Las Pedrizas. There, watercourses and erosion have carved ravines into the plateaus over time. The route ends in Aldeonte. The landform and the endpoint are two concrete landmarks along this route.
Another option is the Route of the Springs. There are also paths in Urueñas leading to shepherds’ huts scattered across the municipality, which you can see and learn about along the way. These huts could shelter two or three people. The routes therefore have different focuses: the ravine landscape and Aldeonte on the Sendero, and the springs or shepherds’ huts on the other routes.
At the exit from the village in the direction of Castroserracín, there is a developed recreation area with tables, benches and a play area. Two historic royal roads cross the municipality; today, they have been adapted for traffic. This refers to transport routes through the municipality, whereas the other routes described lead to specific natural and cultural destinations.
Cultural Traditions
The traditional Santa Águeda festival is celebrated every year in Urueñas and kept alive by the Águederas. The Semana Cultural is also a recurring tradition. It brings people of all ages together around culture, entertainment and civic participation. The events have different focuses: Santa Águeda is associated with the role of the Águederas, while the Semana Cultural brings together people from different age groups. If you plan your trip around either event, check the exact dates in advance.
