If you choose Sotosalbos as the destination for a hotel stay, natural landscapes and a long-established local culture come together. Sotosalbos lies on the edge of the Sierra de Guadarrama; the dense forest of Mata del Pirón is next to the village, and Puerto de Malangosto is a few kilometres away. This gives you two distinct areas to focus on when planning your trip: landscapes and trails on the one hand, and the village center and local traditions on the other. Depending on what you would like to experience, you can take these themes into account when choosing when to visit.

Landscapes and Trails Around Sotosalbos

The Cañada Real Soriana Occidental nature trail passes through Sotosalbos. You can walk along it; most of it is also suitable for mountain bikes. Some sections are steep and require caution. If you plan to take the trail, consider these sections and proceed carefully. Sotosalbos also has a rich natural heritage, with gentle trails. The nature trail is a specific, named route through the village; the gentle trails add another aspect to the surrounding landscape. When planning your trip, you can therefore consider whether you would rather focus on the trail or on the landscape of Sotosalbos as a whole.

The Village Center and Traces of Everyday Life

The village center retains a clearly recognizable rural layout: traditional buildings are grouped around the parish church. Traditional Segovian architecture is on display in the Plaza Mayor, characterized by stone, white cement, wood and Arabic roof tiles. Together, these details give the village a distinctive appearance and offer different perspectives on its architectural heritage.

The Fuente de arriba, a very old spring, is in Barrio de Arriba. For centuries, it supplied the residents of Sotosalbos with water. The traditional Potro de herrar also offers a glimpse of an aspect of earlier agricultural work: it was used more often to shoe oxen in draft teams than horses or mules. At the edge of the municipal area, a Cruz de Canto stands beside the paths to Cerca del Boquerón. These named places and objects add to the impression conveyed by the plaza and village center.

Inside the Iglesia de San Miguel de Sotosalbos are frescoes, a baptismal font and a sculpture of Our Lady of the Sierra. The interior adds further artistic and religious motifs to the exterior impressions. If you are interested in architectural heritage, you can include these specific details in your trip planning alongside the rural layout of the village center and the materials used in the Plaza Mayor.

Festivals and Recurring Events

On the first Sunday in August, an image of María Magdalena is carried through the streets of Sotosalbos to the sound of dulzaina and tamboril music. The summer festivities in her honor take place on the first weekend in August and also include events starting on the Monday of that same week. These include sports, children's workshops, orchestras and food events; the exact program may vary from year to year.

Santa Águeda is celebrated on the weekend closest to February 5. The tradition is led by no more than seven married women, appointed by the female mayors the previous year. Another recurring event takes place around September 29: on the Sunday closest to that date, residents carry an image of the local patron saint through the streets, accompanied by dulzaina and tamboril music. After Mass, residents also traditionally carry an image of the Virgin Mary through the streets, again to the sound of dulzaina and tamboril.

The dates have different focuses: the August program combines a procession with festivities, Santa Águeda has a limited number of participants, and the event around September 29 also features a procession. If you would like to plan your trip around a festival, check the specific dates for your chosen year in advance. This will let you combine your planned hotel stay with the event that interests you most, or choose when to travel based on the landscape and village setting.
