Villanueva del Conde is designated a Bien de Interés Cultural (Asset of Cultural Interest) in the Conjunto Histórico (Historic Ensemble) category. The historic ensemble is considered a record of rural life in times past and an expression of the town’s social and cultural identity. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay, you can choose your destination based on whether you are especially interested in local history, the landscape or a cycling route.

Historic Ensemble

The parish church of Villanueva del Conde is dedicated to Saint Sebastian and Saint Fabian and dates from the 15th and 16th centuries. The Ermita del Humilladero is located at the entrance to the town and dates from the early 17th century. These two religious buildings can therefore be considered in terms of their dates, dedications and locations.

Inside the historic ensemble are so-called “huertitas,” small gardens belonging to the houses. Three passages beneath the houses are connected by stone “callejinas.” These callejinas are lined by walls about one metre high. These details add a distinctive spatial feature of the ensemble to the picture of its religious buildings: the connections between the passages beneath the houses are also part of its described layout.

Landscape and Plant Life

About one third of the area of Villanueva del Conde lies within the Parque Natural de las Batuecas-Sierra de Francia (Las Batuecas-Sierra de Francia Natural Park). About one third lies within the Reserva de la Biosfera Sierras de Béjar-Francia (Sierras de Béjar-Francia Biosphere Reserve), which was recognised by UNESCO on 27 October 2006. Both figures refer to approximate proportions of the area and identify different protected areas.

The surrounding area has forests of holm oaks, chestnut trees and oaks, as well as stands of rockrose and thyme. Villanueva del Conde’s climate favours the growth of cherry trees, olive trees and vines.

Cycling on the Trail Network

Route number 4 of the Ruta MTB Sierra de Francia runs between Villanueva del Conde and Garcibuey. The route is 11.6 kilometres long and rated easy. Check local conditions before setting out.

The Ruta MTB Sierra de Francia includes more than 80 kilometres of marked trails in the municipalities of Garcibuey, San Miguel del Robledo, Sequeros and Villanueva del Conde. It can be used in all four seasons. Route number 4 has a specific distance and difficulty rating; the information about the trail network describes its larger scale and the municipalities involved. This allows you to consider an individual ride and the marked network at different levels of planning. Also check the signage and route before setting out.

Wine in the Sierra de Francia

Alongside its connection to plant life, wine also has a cultural and historical significance here: the Centro de Interpretación del Vino (Wine Interpretation Centre), which opened in Villanueva del Conde in 2025, presents the history of wine production in the Sierra de Francia. Together with the region’s climatic suitability for vines, this gives the topic both a landscape and a historical dimension.
