Puerto De Béjar – Trails and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Puerto De Béjar
Explore Puerto De Béjar through its historic trails, buildings, and mountain surroundings. If you’re looking for a hotel in Puerto De Béjar, these features can help you find a destination that matches your interests. The trails range from the Roman road to a former railway corridor.
Landscape and trails
Puerto De Béjar is surrounded by mountains, including Peña Negra. The area around the town is also characterized by forests of oak, chestnut, maple, ash, rowan, and hazel. The landscape therefore offers a point of interest in its own right, alongside the historic buildings and transport routes.
The Camino Natural Vía de la Plata passes through Puerto De Béjar along a former railway corridor. This 21-kilometer Vía Verde has been developed for walking and cycling. Here, the Vía Verde follows the former route of the Ruta de la Plata railway line, on the Sevilla–Gijón route.
The marked hiking trails in Puerto De Béjar include the Peñanegra route. Check the signs locally if you plan to follow this route. For cyclists, the Entresierras BTT routes in Valbuena include a section for adapted bicycles between Cantagallo and Puerto De Béjar. Route conditions may vary; check for current information before setting out.
Traces of the Vía de la Plata
Beneath a bridge on the Autovía de la Plata (A-66), an excavated and restored section of the Vía de la Plata, paved with pebbles, is preserved within the municipal area. This section offers a glimpse of what the route looked like in this area.
Several Roman milestones have been preserved in Puerto De Béjar along the Calzada Romana de la Vía de la Plata. One marked the beginning of the road at the station settlement and corresponded to the milestone at mile CXXXII. A stretch of the Calzada known as the Camino Real also preserves much of its original paving.
Buildings and garden
Two buildings offer different historical and stylistic points of reference: the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción dates back to the 16th century and is Gothic in style. The Ermita de Santa Bárbara dates from the 15th century and features Baroque style.
Coto de Nuestra Señora del Carmen lies on the border between Puerto De Béjar and Peñacaballera. Its romantic garden is laid out in the style of the late 19th century and is listed as a BIC in the Historic Garden category.
The Camino de Santiago and dates
The Camino de Santiago route passes to the left of the town, not directly through Puerto De Béjar. The 16th stage of the Camino de Santiago along the Vía de la Plata passes through the Puerto De Béjar area and is 32 kilometers long in total. This refers to the entire stage, not to a route through the town.
A tourism description mentions a procession or pilgrimage to the La Cruz grounds on May 3. Check the current dates if you’d like to plan your trip around it.
