Herguijuela de la Sierra lies in the heart of the Parque Natural de Batuecas-Sierra de Francia. Trails, the townscape and the landscape offer different highlights for your stay: a circular route shares knowledge about mushrooms, historic paths recall the pilgrimage tradition, and distinctive buildings tell the story of the town. There are also striking rock formations and a riverside recreation area on the Alagón.

Trails with different focuses

The circular Mycological Nature Trail is 12.7 km long and connects Cepeda, Madroñal and Herguijuela de la Sierra. Its focus is mushrooms and the surprising relationship between mushrooms and people. The route thus connects three towns through a nature-related theme. If you are interested in mushrooms, the nature trail offers a different way to explore the area than trails linked to its pilgrimage history.

The PR SA-14 follows the old route used by pilgrims from Herguijuela de la Sierra via La Alberca to Peña de Francia. Here, the historic route takes center stage. The PR SA-18 leads into a reserve zone of the park. Together, these three trail themes reveal different sides of the destination: nature education, pilgrimage history and a reserve landscape.

The terrain also shapes the character of the surrounding area. Herguijuela de la Sierra has a rugged landscape with quartzite formations and pronounced differences in elevation. These features give the natural environment a distinct character from the historic townscape and provide a focus of their own when exploring the destination.

Townscape and pilgrimage history

Narrow streets and houses with Tramoneras and wide balconies define the traditional townscape of Herguijuela de la Sierra. The Iglesia Parroquial de la Asunción offers a glimpse into the history of its architecture: the church dates from the 15th century and is dedicated to the Virgen de la Asunción. The castle’s defensive tower was later connected to the church and now serves as its bell tower. This building brings together the history of the defensive tower and its present-day religious function.

Another remarkable detail can be found on the façades of some houses: fossils of trilobites, marine animals from the Paleozoic Era. So the townscape offers not only traditional architectural features, but also traces of a much older geological history. The fossils and the church reflect different periods and complement the pilgrimage history with a geological theme.

The pilgrimage tradition also includes a medieval building that provided shelter for walkers on the Camino de Santiago and on the route to Peña de Francia. It adds to the story of the PR SA-14, but the two details describe different things: the trail follows an old pilgrimage route, while the building illustrates how walkers were accommodated.

Rocky landscapes and riverbanks

Notable natural features include the Haya de Herguijuela, which is more than 400 years old, and La Torrita. La Torrita is a rocky area with a particularly unusual shape, surrounded by rockroses and holm oaks. The two sites stand out for different reasons: the Haya for its age, and La Torrita for the shape of its rocky terrain and its vegetation.

La Ferrería offers a different kind of attraction. This recreation area lies on the Alagón and has picnic tables beneath pine trees, as well as an area for fishing and swimming. It therefore differs from natural features defined primarily by their age, rock formations or vegetation: here, the riverside setting and the listed leisure activities are part of the experience. These different places help you choose what to focus on during your stay, from landscapes and history to activities by the water.
