Discover La Serna
Accommodation in La Serna
When planning a stay in La Serna, you can choose between several distinctive features of the area: the parish church of the Assumption of Mary, the Roman villa of Los Moros, the landscape along the Carrión, and the Puebla Luis cheese brand. Together, these themes take you from sacred architecture and the Roman past to river scenery and local cheesemaking. You can choose the focus of your stay according to whether you are especially interested in architectural history, the Roman past, riverside walking paths, or regional cheeses.
The Church of the Assumption of Mary and its architecture
The parish church of the Assumption of Mary dates from the 16th century. Its single-nave body has side chapels beneath Gothic rib vaults; the chancel is covered by a barrel vault. A single-nave body is the main longitudinal space of a church without multiple parallel naves; the side chapels extend it laterally. Rib vaults and barrel vaults are two different forms of ceiling construction. They can be distinguished even without specialist knowledge: rib vaults are structured by intersecting ribs, while a barrel vault appears as a continuous vaulted ceiling. The main altarpiece is also a work by Juan de Espinosa.
The Roman villa of Los Moros
A Roman villa was discovered in the northern part of La Serna, at a site known as “Los Moros.” It may have been founded toward the end of the 1st century and remained in use until the 5th century. The find complements the 16th-century church with an archaeological connection to Roman times. The historical perspective thus extends from the 16th-century church to a villa whose foundation may date back to the 1st century.
The Carrión, river meadows, and walking paths
La Serna lies in the area of the Vega de Saldaña irrigated by the Carrión River. The riverbank and the town’s location on the edge of a terrace above the river form a viewpoint; from there, the view stretches far across the river meadows and the surrounding woodland. Maintained walking paths run along the banks of the Carrión. These offer two distinct points of interest to choose from: views over the river meadows and woodland on the one hand, and walking paths along the banks on the other. The landscape can therefore be seen at two scales: as an area irrigated by the Carrión and as a specific view of meadows and woodland from the viewpoint.
Cheese from La Serna
Quesería Artesanal del Río Carrión is located in La Serna. The Puebla Luis brand’s products are described as artisan-made, natural, and free of preservatives and colorants. In 2026, Puebla Luis semi-cured cheese made from raw sheep’s milk received a Cincho de Oro. An article dated April 8, 2024, also lists semi-cured and cured cheeses, blue-veined sheep’s cheese, processed cheese spreads, and yogurts under the brand. This makes it possible to distinguish the specific variety awarded in 2026 from the broader selection listed in April 2024.
