Guaza de Campos brings together a clearly defined natural theme and tangible examples of cultural heritage. Great bustards, churches, dovecote ensembles and the tradition of Paloteo each add a different dimension. When planning your trip, it is therefore worth looking at what distinguishes the town in each respect: architectural details, its place on named routes and a local tradition that is still maintained.

Churches and architectural history

The Iglesia de la Asunción is an 18th-century parish church, built of stone and brick. It has three naves and two towers on the façade. These features highlight different aspects of the building: the naves divide the interior, while the towers define its exterior appearance. The church can therefore be described not only by its date, but also by its materials and layout.

A different architectural combination can be seen at the Ermita del Santo Cristo de Acebes, formerly called the Ermita de San Pedro de Acebes. It features Mudéjar inspiration and a Gothic portico; its roof structure dates from the 16th century and follows the artesonado de par y nudillo construction style. The reference to the 16th century applies to the chapel’s roof structure, not to the parish church. Mudéjar inspiration, the portico and the roof structure describe different aspects of the building.

Dovecotes at provincial and local levels

The Ruta Oeste de Palomares is a 50-kilometre route through the province that includes Guaza de Campos. It covers seven dovecote ensembles and a total of 69 structures of various types. These figures describe the route as a whole, not just the local dovecotes. The route thus provides a provincial perspective on the subject, while the figures for Guaza describe individual groups in the town.

An inventory updated in 2024 counts nine dovecotes in the southern Conjunto sur de palomares de Guaza de Campos. In the northern part, it lists six more, which are described as being better preserved. The number and condition of the dovecotes may change. Check the current status if these details are important for your visit. The distinction between the southern ensemble and the northern group organizes the local information by location.

Great bustards and local tradition

Guaza de Campos is also clearly defined in ornithological terms: it is an area with a high concentration of great bustards and part of the Tierra de Campos birdwatching route. The two statements refer to different scales: the concentration concerns the area, while the route places it within a broader thematic context.

In 2020, support was provided for improvements and equipment at the steppe bird tourist information centre in the social centre building.

The tradition of Paloteo de Guaza is still maintained. Alongside the built heritage, this enduring custom provides a cultural point of reference for the town.
