Aguilar de Campoo offers several clearly distinct themes for a stay: the medieval city walls, Romanesque cultural sites, archaeological traces and the Embalse de Aguilar de Campoo. This gives you the option of planning your trip around history, routes, or water and scenery. The routes also differ in their scope: alongside the Ruta del Románico, there is a circular route almost 60 kilometres long.

City Walls, Romanesque Architecture and Castle

Six of the medieval city wall’s seven gates have been preserved. This contrast between what remains and the original total gives the fortifications a tangible historical context. The Ruta del Románico adds Romanesque sites to the picture: it passes through the historic town centre and its Romanesque areas, and by Romanesque monuments. Its focus is therefore on the buildings and areas within Aguilar de Campoo.

The Centro Expositivo ROM is located in the sacristy and church of the Monastery of Santa María la Real. A teaching model there explains everyday life in a medieval village. In addition to Romanesque buildings, this brings daily life in a village of that era into focus. When choosing cultural highlights, you can therefore distinguish between a route through Romanesque areas and an exhibition venue featuring a model of medieval village life.

Castle and Archaeological Traces

The consolidated ruins of Castillo de Aguilar were declared a Historic-Artistic Monument in 1949. The castle stands on a hill at an altitude of around 970 metres. The monument designation and elevation provide two different points of reference: the former identifies its historic monument status, while the latter indicates the Castillo’s approximate location.

Huerta Varona also offers a glimpse into earlier settlement. The site was inhabited from the 1st century BC to the 7th century AD. Finds point to a Roman vicus with associated baths. A long period of settlement and a specific interpretation supported by finds thus sit side by side: the time span describes the site’s use, while the interpretation as a vicus with baths is expressed cautiously.

Reservoir, Beach and Scenery

Water sports can be enjoyed at the Embalse de Aguilar de Campoo. Its surroundings include artificial beaches and a pine forest that has been prepared for a pleasant day amid greenery and at the beach. These offer different ways to enjoy the same reservoir: sporting activities on the water and surroundings prepared for a stay among greenery and at the beach. The reservoir is also part of the well-known Ruta de los Pantanos.

The Ermita de Nuestra Señora de Llano is also part of the history of the reservoir area. It was relocated to the area known as “Playa del Pantano”; its new site was completed in 1961. The year refers to the completion of this site. Together with the reservoir’s inclusion in the Ruta de los Pantanos, the relocation is another historically specific aspect of the area.

Two Routes with Different Scopes

The circular route “Pedaleando por el Románico” passes through Aguilar de Campoo, Corvio, Matalbaniega, Villavega de Aguilar, Cillamayor, Matabuena, Bustillo de Santullán, Villanueva de la Torre, Salinas de Pisuerga, Barcenilla de Pisuerga, Barrio de Santa María and Vallespinoso de Aguilar, before returning to Aguilar de Campoo. It is almost 60 kilometres long. Its circular itinerary, the towns it passes through and its approximate total length help give you a sense of the route.

The two routes associated with Romanesque architecture have different focuses: the Ruta del Románico passes through the historic town centre, its Romanesque areas and monuments. “Pedaleando por el Románico,” by contrast, is described as a circular route through several named towns, almost 60 kilometres long. This distinction can help you decide whether the Romanesque sites in town or the longer circular route is the main focus of your stay.
