Villafeliz de la Sobarriba offers several points of interest for a stay: the parish church’s works of art, medieval links to the town’s history, a fountain traditionally associated with the Roman world, and a circular walk that passes through the town. This lets you decide whether to focus on sacred art and history or on a longer hike.

Church art and imagery

The parish church’s main altarpiece is designed in the Churrigueresque style and features five vertical panels and two superimposed tiers. It comprises nine panels: four of the upper panels depict the Evangelists, while the central one shows Christ in the Shroud. For those interested in sacred art, both the structure of the retable and the identification of individual motifs offer points of interest.

The furnishings include a Baroque polychrome carved wooden figure of the Immaculate Conception with estofado decoration. The Baroque imagery on the altarpiece also includes a depiction of Saint Roch with a dog. An inscription in the church associated with Christ in the Shroud states that the Bishop of León, Alfonso Frnz. y Pantoxa, granted 40 days of indulgence for saying a Credo before the image. In this way, an image motif is linked to a specific instruction for prayer.

Medieval links to the town’s history

Villafeliz is documented at least as far back as January 19, 1097: on that day, Bravolio Gutiérrez sold lands in this area associated with the name “Villa Felici.” In 1192, Alfonso IX transferred half of the villa to San Isidoro by royal privilege. The two dates represent different aspects of the town’s history: a land sale in the region and, later, the transfer of part of the villa.

Villafeliz is also named as a place in the Fueros de León, proclaimed by King Alfonso V in the 11th century. A Fueros memorial dating from between 1313 and 1324 mentions Villafeliz in detail and sets out payments, offerings, levies and rights between the districts. These references offer different insights: the Fueros de León name the place, while the later memorial links relations between the districts to specific rules.

Fountain and circular walk

Several fountains in the Sobarriba are traditionally associated with the Roman world; these include a fountain in Villafeliz. The region’s worked-stone fountains are also linked to household water supplies and community cohesion. This adds a subject connected with everyday community life to the church art and historical texts.

Route C is a circular walk from Villalboñe via Carbajosa, Santovenia and Villafeliz, returning to Villalboñe. It is approximately 10 km long and has a low-to-moderate difficulty level. Villafeliz is one section of this route, while the start and finish are in Villalboñe. The approximate distance and difficulty rating offer two different points of reference for planning.
