Vega de Espinareda brings together riverside scenery, hiking trails and historic sites. The CĂşa River flows through the town, which is also part of the Los Ancares Leoneses Biosphere Reserve, recognized on October 27, 2006. When planning your trip, you can focus on nature, hiking or cultural history. If you are looking for a hotel, you can start by considering whether you would prefer to plan your stay around the hiking trails, the riverside landscape or the historic sights.

Hiking with different points of interest

The Ruta del río Ancares starts at the Monasterio de San Andrés in Vega de Espinareda. It is a circular route 16.9 km long, taking 4 hours and 10 minutes, with a low-to-moderate difficulty level. Allow several hours for this hike, and check the route details locally before setting out. The Ruta Espinareda finishes by passing through the town center of Vega de Espinareda on the way back to the Monasterio de San Andrés. This gives you a concrete distinction when choosing a route: the Ruta del río Ancares has a specified length and duration, while the Ruta Espinareda’s final stretch through the town center is a useful point of reference.

The river and places to take a break outdoors

Alongside the river beach, a wooden pedestrian bridge connects the two parts of Vega de Espinareda. It can help you find your way when moving between the neighborhoods. The Corral de los Lobos picnic area in Vega de Espinareda has covered tables and a drinking-water fountain. Check the condition of these facilities before your visit, as they may change due to maintenance. These provide different points of reference for finding your way around town and taking a break outdoors.

Monastery, bridge and heritage protection

The Monasterio de San Andrés is a historic landmark and also the starting point of the Ruta del río Ancares. Its first documented mention dates to 923. Together with the church and the other buildings, the complex is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the Monument category. Another point of historical interest is the Puente Romano: after it was partially destroyed by a flood, it was restored in 1959. The monastery and bridge represent different aspects of the town’s history: an early documented mention and a protected building complex on the one hand, and a dated restoration following flood damage on the other.

Rock art and feast days

Near Sésamo lies the Peña Piñera rock art site, protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural since 1985. Access to the rock paintings is via a firebreak that starts at the viewpoint and the rock art area. If you are planning your trip around feast days, there are two dates to bear in mind: the main celebrations in honor of the Virgen del Carmen take place during the week of July 16, and the San Andrés festival is held on November 30. Dates and programs may vary from year to year. If you would like to plan your stay around one of the festivals, check the details for the relevant year.
