Santa Colomba de Somoza tells a story of muleteers, traditional architecture and historical traces of mining. The Camino de Santiago also shapes the town’s cultural context. If you’re looking for a destination with a rich, tangible history, you’ll find a range of themes here: from former muleteer houses and a cultural archive to a route exploring Roman gold mining and its effect on the landscape.

Muleteers, houses and architectural history

Figures from two centuries show the role the muleteer profession played in the town. In 1561, 32 people lived in Santa Colomba de Somoza, including six muleteers who used 34 mules or horses. In 1752, there were 34 residents; 17 of them were muleteers and owned more than 105 mules. The population changed little between these two records, while the number of muleteers and the scale of the animal stocks differed considerably.

Visitors can explore the design and development of traditional muleteer houses, the casas arrieras, in Santa Colomba de Somoza. The houses offer a tangible way to discover the town’s muleteer history. Nearby, the Torreón de los Osorio is also a striking landmark: it is considered the only surviving example of 14th-century civil architecture in the Maragatería. The square tower is 22 metres high and has four storeys and a dungeon.

Culture and historical traces

The Archivo Gráfico de la Era Pop is housed in the restored La Casa de las Maestras building in Santa Colomba de Somoza. It includes a documentation centre, several exhibition rooms and a multipurpose hall. The venue is intended for concerts, presentations, conferences and film screenings. The archive lies directly on the Camino de Santiago, bringing culture and the pilgrimage route together in one place.

In nearby Rabanal del Camino stands the parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, built in the Romanesque style at the end of the 12th century. According to the Codex Calixtinus, Rabanal is both the endpoint and the starting point of a stage of the Camino de Santiago. The church and the town’s role on the route each give it a distinct historical connection, though they tell different stories.

Archaeological traces are also part of the area’s story. A Roman villa was discovered at Pago del Soldán, an area shared with Turienzo near Laguna Cernea. North of Santa Colomba de Somoza, hills show pits and washing sites from historical mining. These traces add another dimension to the history of muleteering: how past activities shaped the cultural landscape.

Trails, viewpoints and landscape

The El Carballal del Oro cultural route explores the history of Roman gold mining and its lasting impact on the landscape in the municipality of Santa Colomba de Somoza. One of its three viewpoints is Mirador de Laguna Cernea in Santa Colomba. The viewpoint is beside a large artificial lagoon that is almost 2,000 years old. The route thus brings mining history together with a specific feature of the landscape.

The circular trail to Mirador Laguna Cernea begins north of the town centre and is two kilometres long in total. This gives you a clear indication of the route’s length for planning, but not its walking time. The Camino de la Recua is a different route: it was a historic shortcut from the Turienzo Valley towards Puerto de Foncebadón. At the entrance to Foncebadón, the present-day Camino de Santiago arrives from the direction of Rabanal. The two trail descriptions refer to different routes and periods.

Regional cuisine with a distinctive serving order

Cocido maragato is another speciality of the regional cuisine. It consists of nine types of meat, chickpeas with cabbage and noodle soup. It is served in this order: first the meats, then the chickpeas and cabbage, followed by the soup. Pudding and roscĂłn are served to finish. The set order is as much a part of the dish as its ingredients.
