Cacabelos offers several distinct reasons to visit: an archaeological museum with a collection spanning a broad period, a site identified as Roman, street art and buildings with varied historical associations. It also offers the Camino de Santiago, walking and cycling routes, and markets held on a specific schedule. Depending on your interests, you can focus on culture, routes or local food.

Archaeology and Art in Cacabelos

At the heart of Cacabelos is the Museo Arqueológico de Cacabelos. It houses archaeological and ethnographic heritage dating from prehistoric times to the modern era. Its timeline therefore extends well beyond a single period and offers a broad perspective on the history and way of life of the region.

The Yacimiento Arqueológico de la Edrada offers a specific connection to Roman times. This archaeological site is a Roman settlement identified as Bergidum Flavium. In 1994 it was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural, a protected site of special cultural interest. The museum and the site thus represent two different perspectives: a collection spanning prehistoric times to the modern era, and a place identified as Roman.

The Ruta Street Art Cacabelos offers a different perspective, leading through the streets of Cacabelos. It features eight graffiti works by eight different artists and invites reflection on contemporary aesthetic, social and intellectual questions. In this way, the route combines public art with topics to consider while viewing the works.

Religious Architecture, a Bridge and Historic Surroundings

The Santuario de la V Angustia was built in the 18th century in honour of the Virgen de la V Angustia, the patron saint of the municipality. Notable features include altarpieces, sculptures and paintings. Both the sanctuary's dedication and its furnishings are defining themes for anyone interested in religious art.

The present-day bridge in Cacabelos has six ashlar arches and dates from the 16th and 18th centuries. Ashlar masonry is made from dressed stone blocks used to construct the structure. The surrounding area is also home to Castro Ventosa, an oppidum, or fortified settlement. It is considered one of the most important castros in the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula and adds a connection to the area's historic settlement to Cacabelos's cultural offerings.

The Camino de Santiago and Walking and Cycling Routes

The Camino de Santiago passes through Cacabelos and continues for five kilometres to Pieros. There are also ten walking and cycling routes from Cacabelos. These details give you different starting points for planning your trip: a specifically identified section of the Camino and other routes designated for walking and cycling.

The Ruta de los Molinos is a route described in detail. It starts at Plaza del Santuario and follows the left bank of the river towards Quilós. The riverside promenade leads to the mills of Villabuena in Pico da Vila; the route then returns to its starting point via Arborbuena. It includes six buildings with water-powered channel mills. Each houses the mill itself, a dwelling and a storage area. The route and the buildings' uses thus link wayfinding along the trail with the theme of industrial heritage.

For pilgrims, the public municipal pilgrim hostel Santuario de la Quinta Angustia is located at the edge of town. It is reserved exclusively for Camino de Santiago pilgrims with a pilgrim credential. This access requirement is important when planning a trip related to the Camino: the hostel is explicitly limited to this group.

Markets and Octopus

At the markets in Cacabelos, held on the 9th and 26th of each month and on the first and third Mondays, you can try octopus prepared by the well-known Pulpeiras de Cacabelos. The regular schedule makes market days a specific point to consider alongside the cultural attractions and routes. As the schedule may change, check the date before your visit.
